The fight over the date of California's presidential primary may have as much to do with Gov. Gray Davis' political dreams and the state races on the same ballot as with the national presidential campaign.

The question is this: Should California have three statewide elections in one year, with one set aside for presidential contenders?

March primaries are the pits for local elections. Up here, one has to (try) and campaign through snow, ice or frigid weather and paint signs in freezing temperature. Then, if you win a local election in the primary, you have to wait almost another year to serve. The incumbant is a lame duck for 9 months.

I think June is much better.

He wants a solid turnout if he seeks a spot on the ballot as California's "favorite son,"

Huh? No way! Ronald Reagan is California's favorite!

FIRE DAVIS ..... Elect Simon for Governor
