Go Mannix - for governor of Oregon!
California: Call me a hopeless romantic, but I still think that Bill Simon has a shot at besting Gray Doofus. Doofus has approval ratings in the 40s, which is dreadful for an incumbent. As I documented on another thread:
1 - Bill Simon SURGED TWELVE POINTS over the last weekend before the Primary Election in March 2002, from the "last Field poll before the election" to the actual election results - from 37 to 49 - so a ten point swing from their FLAWED numbers is likely now - for Bill Simon,...so I will now confidently predict:2 - RINO Riordan stayed at 31 - before and after that last weekend before the Primary election, and HE was more "popular" than Davis, so Davis may even DROP a little from his "hardcore" supporters, and
3 - I have been predicting a STRONG double-digit showing for the Green Party candidate Peter Camjo for several weeks now, and
4 - I have been ACTIVELY engaged in "grass roots" activism - monitoring BOTH sides - for the last two months, and ALL of the PASSION is on OUR side...
Bill Simon = 44Please bookmark this thread - for review on Wednesday, November 6.
Gray Davis = 40
Peter Camejo = 14
all others = 2
The radio newsman reported on a Boston Globe poll in which Shannon O'Brien had 41% and Mitt Romney had 40%, with a margin of error of 5%. A few points:
1. That's a large margin of error, which would indicate a small sample.
2. It's a Boston Globe poll, and they have a history of over-representing liberal Boston and the liberal nearby suburbs, while the other parts of the state are quite conservative in a lot of ways. I wouldn't be surprised if Romney's vote is under-represnted in a Globe survey.
3. The two percentages only add up to 81%. That leaves 19% of the voters, a huge number so close to the election. Could that mean that large numbers are going third party? It wouldn't be surprising, as Romney and O'Brien have both been less than charming as campaigners.
4. Will weather (if it's bad) be a factor? The unions of public employees will get out the vote, whatever impediments there are. That would favor O'Brien.
He's pretty good. Waffled some on gun control post-Columbine, but has (before and since) worked for uniform CCW. On economy and taxes he's done OK.
Hasn't done anything really stupid in response to the high-tech downturn, which has hit CO pretty hard.
Nobody really hates him, left or right, and he's not had many substantive controversies. He's won just about every battle he's been in, and works well with both parties without giving away the store.
All in all I'd say he's solid but unspectacular, which is pretty much what one wants in a governor.
If you read that Mondale had an 8 point lead anywhere, then yes. The only poll I've seen with that number is the Star-Trib poll. It was picked up all over the country.
We were not allowed to enforce the law requiring insurance on your vehicle, cuz uncle roy said it was discriminating to the poor to enforce that law. Owens said, you ain't in the computer showing insured, you don't get license plates.
Every year we had a surplus of income tax, uncle roy said, we must vote if we want it back or give it to another government program. We wanted it back, so he divided it among all citizens of the state, even if they did not pay a penny in income tax. Owens reduced our rate by 1/2%.
The budget went over, so Owens decided instead of raising taxes, he would just have every state employee take one day per month off without pay and that took care of the deficit.
Schools are now accountable and we have even increased their spending without raising taxes.
Yeah, we like him.

Million-Man-Math strikes again. Nation of ialsm is winning.
On a completely different note, where do you live in Colorado? Do you like it? Are you a transplant or have you been there all your life? My husband and I are considering leaving California if Gray Davis wins ... Colorado is one of three states we're looking at.
Also, one good thing, old roy roemer left us and is now the school superintendent in CALIFORNIA!
