Rebel Web Sites Hit by Cyber War

Reuters Chechen separatists say the Federal Security Service, or FSB, is behind the collapse of two web sites that form a key source of news for the rebel area.

The two sites, Kavkaz.org and Chechenpress.com, collapsed under a barrage of attacks from computer hackers just after last month's theater siege.

"On Oct. 26 ... our web site Kavkaz.org was attacked by a group of hackers," said a spokesman for the U.S.-registered site, run by Movladi Udugov, a former Chechen minister now in exile.

Udugov's site and Chechen Press, which resumed operations after a few days, have been a valuable source of alternative information for those monitoring the conflict in Chechnya.

The FSB declined to comment on what it called the web sites' "criminal activities."

"They are just lying, they have a tradition of lying, that is their ethic," FSB spokesman Andrei Larushin said.

Udugov moved his site to Kavkazcenter.com, but by early November that also came under electronic attack and was not working Thursday.

Kavkaz.org is now 'parked' at an Atlanta ISP: Interland.  There may be no content on the site -- but this ISP is still providing a service to terrorists.  Ask them why they are taking terrorists money.

We'll take that honor! New Internet regulations require valid contact info for the owners of domains or the domain will be cancelled within 15 days. However, it is possible to have a proxy company own the site for you (this makes the proxy company legally responsible for the actions of the terrorists).  The Chechen Islamists hired a company "Domains By Proxy" -- which shut the site down after we informed them that they had lied in the past about their registration. Udug Movladi did not live in Orlando Florida next to Disneyland.

As a bonus, the company revealed the real domain registration -- Perhaps the Russians have someone in Istanbul who can visit this address to see if it is correct:

The chechenpress.com is broadcasting from San Francisco and is owned by someone operating out of a P.O. box in Oregon.  Looks like the registration's got a funky phone number -- I'll bet it's fake. Let's report it to the internet authorities.

To get the ISP to take action against the terrorist site we'll need examples of 'Actionable Content' that we can show them. We need examples of  hate speech, liable, slander, incitement to murder, illegal activity such as terrorism.  Saying nasty, racist things about Jewish people qualifies. Examples of this are not hard to find on an Islamist site. However, the site is in Russian -- perhaps someone who speaks Russian can find something really noxious, translate it, and send it to us.

It was my understanding that the false address for Udugov was a contributing factor for the downfall of kavkaz so I was wondering if a false address for chechenpress would be effective as well. Then I went back and looked and it is a post office box...
