California: The tarnish on the Golden State
The Orange County Register ^ | Sunday December 22, 2002 | Steven Greenhut Senior editorial writer and columnist for the Register

Perhaps the eternally warm weather, the rugged coastline and the luscious mountain views are warping the minds of people who ought to know better. The state's budget deficit is $34 billion-plus, electricity and workers' compensation costs are skyrocketing, and a spate of anti-business legislation is about to go into effect. Yet the electorate remains in La-La Land, apparently unaware of what the crisis will mean for its lives and pocketbooks.

California state motto is EUREKA.Which means "I found it" supposedly the words uttered when Gold was found at Sutters mill.Looks like all the Gold in California is gone.IT will become a third rate, third world country and the wealth that is there will cash out and move to Florida, Texas,Georgia and other warm places.I think Nevada was fastest growing state in the Union last year.Should be intresting, yet painful to watch.

Looks like all the Gold in California is gone.

All the gold in California is in a bank in the middle of Beverly Hills, in somebody else's name. So if you are dreaming about California, it don't matter at all where you've played before, California's a brand new game.

As Connell puts its, getting "lucky" in a stock sale is no background for the controller's office.

Sounds like she's talking about the DNC chairman, instead of Steve Westly, liberal activist.

Regretably for California residents, it may just be used as a bellweather for what happens when government grows unrestrained by it's citizens or it's politicians..

This afternoon I was on my walk when the disscussion turned to our favorite Gov. and the ways the democrats (Communists) will try to make up for their spending.

I almost fell dead in my tracks when one of my spys reported the grey davis is contemplating a 3.5% tax on real estate sales.

Gotta find a buyer for this old house soon! Then hitch up ol dobbin and heat for the mountains.

Thanks for posting this, I missed it in the morning paper.

Nevada should get all of California's Colorado river water to compensate for having to absorb all their fleeing millionaires.

Obviously this reporter is from the editorial staff. The rest of the paper has been supportive of davis and part and parcel to the problem by covering up for him along with the majority of the media in the state. I subscribe to the paper and have read the nonsense articles in support of davis by the front page editors. In three years when I retire my wife and I are going to add to the population in Nevada. All these clowns know how to do is pass anti-gun and gay-rights legislation. Parley

"Perhaps the eternally warm weather..."

Eternally warm weather? It's going down to 32 here in the valley tonight. I've seen really cold weather (Fort Knox, Ky: 50 degrees below zero, with wind chill), but this isn't exactly warm.

I finally had it. It took me 25 minutes to drive from my place of business on Orange Avemue in Coronado to my residence on First St. at the foot of Orange, on the Bay...less than one mile.

But that is not all. Try on a property tax of 6K a year, etc. And, the freeway so clogged that a trip to La Jolla was a nightmare.

So, we did Arizona.and love it. I will miss the Christmas lights at the Del, but hey...we now belong to the Bullhead City Walmart Social club; and the parkway to the Hilton, across the river has a car or two on it from time to time, but I have to look hard to find 'em. And, my electric bill was $26.00 this month...just for openers. *S*

Merry Christmas...and Pack Your Bags. The natives are friendly. DKP

relocating

Did just that 8 years ago. Lived in Chico. No work but minimum wage. Went broke.

Now I live in a cold-winter climate in papermill country. I work in one of those mills for good pay. Poorman spots trailers for another one in Green Bay. Sure my taxes are high. But that can be remedied.

And it may be pretty in California, and warm (or at least not as Arctic as Wisconsin), but you CAN'T EAT THE SCENERY.

That electric bill will be higher come summer...

Bullhead City has the distinction of being "hottest place in the country" many many days each summer. If it weren't for Death Valley, you'd be the champs.

Furthermore, even as California politicians have engaged in a massive spending spree, California voters have approved an excessive amount of debt spending. California, she said, has become over-leveraged, which means that less money will be available to pay for the real infrastructure needs faced by the state.

Rather than invest in important infrastructure, the Davis administration spent the windfall on salary hikes for prison guards and other unions, and on locked-in state spending that will not benefit most Californians. This is so, despite the state's crumbling infrastructure that has not kept up with dramatic population growth.

I still think the Adopt-a-PotHole - Fill it with a socialist program would catch on if we gave it a try.
