Funny (organic): Rodney Dangerfield, Phil Hartman!

Unfunny (explicit): Frank Zappa, Woody Allen! Actually the early Woody Allen movies such as Take The Money And Run, Bananas, and Annie Hall were HILARIOUS. Then Allen began to think of himself as another Ingmar Bergman and his movies became pretentious although Broadway Danny Rose was pretty funny.

The funniest TV show was Russian by way of Canada's SCTV. It was a satire of My Mother The Car where Nikita Khruschev comes back reincarnated as a tractor on a commune. Anyway, Khruschev as the tractor was giving romantic advice to a lovelorn communal farmer. Absolutely the most HILARIOUS skit I've ever seen. It was part of C3P1 TV which was the SCTV satirical Russian TV channel.

Funny ( organic ). Unfunny ( explicit ).
That formula perfectly summarizes the essence of what makes the funny, funny, and the unfunny, unfunny.
W.C.Fields, for example, was organically funny. His very being was deeply subversive, and yet loveable at the same time.
