Possible Terrorist Activity in Surabaya, Indonesia
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade advises that it has credible information that terrorist groups with a history of targeting Westerners and Western interests may be planning terrorist activity on or about 23 March in Surabaya, Indonesia.
Australians are advised not to travel to Surabaya. Australians in Surabaya are advised to exercise extreme caution, to remain at home wherever possible and to avoid commercial and public places frequented by foreigners such as clubs, restaurants, bars, other entertainment areas, hotels, schools, outdoor recreation events, tourist areas, places of worship, office buildings, international fast food outlets, shopping centres, public transport including ferries, luxury hotels and premises and buildings associated with foreign governments or interests.
Australians in or planning to travel to Indonesia are also reminded of the importance of monitoring closely the Department's travel advice for Indonesia (http://www.dfat.gov.au/zw-cgi/view/Advice/Indonesia). The travel advice was updated on 21 March, to advise against travel to Surabaya. The Australian Embassy in Jakarta also issued a bulletin on 21 March informing Australians in Indonesia of this advice. We continue to advise Australians to defer non-essential travel to Indonesia, including Bali.
