I worked for a well known & popular restaurant here in SF called Aqua, which takes in millions a year. The Chef-owner Michael Mina is well known as a tyrant in the kitchen, even gone so far has to use his hands on them, has yelled & screamed at servers in the main dining room in front of customers. He thinks he's a God & his shit don't smell. The working conditions are unbearable so many servers or kitchen staff don't last very long. He treats women like they are stupid...must be his Egyptian heritage showing thru. The managers get a take of the servers tips which I think is horrible since they make so much more than the servers. [editor's note: This is illegal. Contact the Depatment of Labor and make the bastard pay!!] Some dirt on the customers....the Mayor, Willie (tight-ass) Brown likes to frequent the restaurant often but he demands the best of service, but only leaves a 10% tip, while wearing his designer suits. He works the servers to the bone & treats them like dirt under his feet.

No mention, of course, about the type of service provided. If you're a celebrity apparently a very large tip is expected ... regardless.

In many countries, tipping isn't even done. It's considered rude.

Were it not for the fact that I know many people essentially work for tips, I wouldn't leave them myself.

Then again, maybe I'm just a cheapskate.

It's a free market. The idea that a 15% tip is a minimum would be like a 15% tax on food. People are free to not tip at all. No one ever criticizes the restaurants that pay 3.00 an hour and expect consumers to share their payroll expense.

If 2 people have a $300 dinner, the idea that a waiter should get +45 for 15 minutes of actual work is ridiculous.

I waited on Barbara Striesand one day in San Diego. She was with her boyfriend "James Something", I say that because I cant remember his name. Anyway, everything was going fine until this over-zealous employee of ours decides he wants to run her food out. Little did the idiot know was that he was taking the wrong food to her. He delivered the food with a little school girl attitude and left. I went to see how everything was going and she was such a bitch. She atarted yelling at me because she was eating the wrong food. I wantd to say "why the fuck are you eating it anyway." After all was said and done and a comped meal she left me five bucks on about $150 in product for free. I wanted to kick the other server's ass. And hers too.

I hate to bring race into this, but the many waitresses I have known have let it be known to me that basically, blacks don't tip.

When I was a bartender years ago I found this to be very true. I have actually served drinks to Penn and Teller, Will Wheaton, Grampa Munster, Tod Rungren, Gayle Sayers, John Riggins, Hank Stram, Len Dawson and tons of others I can't think of. The worst tippers were liberal local celebrities like the weather guy or a local division II college coach. Football palyers seem to like batenders. They usually establish a relationship early and often would arrange to pay for lots of people's drinks up front. Penn Gillette is the nicest and LOUDEST man I ever poured a drink for.

Considering that most of the Hollywood elite are a heartbeat away from living on tips themselves, they should leave at least 20% just to save their karma.

If it's true, these Hollyweird folk should be ashamed. I mean, the fact they are rude and arrogant is unsurprising given that they have handlers, of various descriptions, around them all day, telling them how wonderful they are. if they don't, they're fired. Still, with all their left wing views, you'd think they'd show the working class some respect.

The worst tippers, in my experience, are people who come in with coupons. During college I worked in a place that routinely put out "Buy one get one free" coupons. And they'd tip $2 at best...

I always tip very well. Smokers (like myself) generally tend to tip very well. I waitressed for a short while a long time ago, and I found that in general elderly people and blacks tip the very worst.

That Madonna left only a $10.00 tip is nothing short of shameful, btw...

I'm sorry, but complaining that Allen Iverson "only" left a $50 tip is a tad ridiculous. If everyone's spending $100 a meal there and the average customer is tipping $10 per meal, the waiter is probably clearing $300-$400 a day which isn't bad.

I don't always tip 15%. Then again, when I get a $22 meal, I'll leave a $3 tip to save everybody on change. The difference between whatever I tip and 15% is always change.

TIPS = To Insure Prompt Service.

A servers income is dependent on TIPS.

Servers that give good service survive...those that don't...don't.

But there is no scum lower on this earth, liberal/conservative, rich/poor, young/old, black/white/etc., than a person that is well served, and under tips. 20% minimum. If you can't handle it, don't eat out.

When Hildabeast, BJ Clinton, and their hangers-on crowd came to near my hometown of Skaneatles a few years back, they ate, and ate, and ate the town out of house and home and never even paid their bills!

They went to the Old Stone Mill and ordered the left side of the menu, 5 bottles of the best wine, plus dessert. When Hillary! saw them at the cash register totaling the bill-----she quickly began barking orders that it was time to leave.

But, what do you expect from someone who claims her husbands used underwear as an IRS deduction.

I used to work as a waiter in a restaurant in a small city that is a state capital, home to one of the service academies, and is about 300 years old, thus a big tourist destination. Therefore, I served a lot of politicians, lobbyists, etc. who were mainly vain, with big ole egos. Most were experienced restaurant goers, and therefore, very demanding, but very appreciative of good service also. They tipped well, but you earned every penny of it. Military brass was a mixed bag. Tourists were very friendly and tipped lousy.

It was my experience that blacks are indeed very bad tippers, however, the best tip I ever got was from a young black minister who brought in about 15 of his elderly church members for Sunday brunch.

Waiting tables is like any other business. You have to concentrate on doing your job well ALL the time. If you get bad customers who don't tip you just have to forget about it and go on.

I tip according to the service I get.If it is good I'll leave up to 25%. If it is bad I will leave nothing. A tip is earned, it is not a constitutional right.
