I don't get the tipping thing, anyway, never have. In any other job, you either do the work well or you don't get a raise, or you eventually get fired, and you get paid a solid check.

"To Insure Proper Service" doesn't make sense, because you tip *after* the service, not before, and may never be there again. And even if you are there again, what's the odds you'll get the same server who remembers your propensity to tip anyway?

I hate tips. I've never been into haggling, either. Just give me the price, and I'll decide what I want to buy. I hate commissions too. Just pay employees a decent salary and supervise their performance to make sure they're doing the job right.

That's the problem. They get nearly nothing. Something like $2.50 and hour. The IRS taxes them on the basis of like 12%, so if you tip less, your stay there costs them money!

It's a hard life from what I've read.

The #1 cause of this is a mis-communication from the restaurant industry. Blacks don't tip because for generations they weren't allowed into restaurants and after that only went out on special occations. Same for Europeans. They don't know any better because no one ever told them.

I have read a LOT on tipping (wierd subject that fascinates me) and I don't know how much to tip my barista. A few years ago $1 sounded generous, but now I don't know. How much do you tip the dudes who wipe your car down after a carwash? Did you know that it's now considered 10/15/20% for tips? 10 for substandard, 15 for normal and 20 for good?

You can make a decent amount if you're savvy, but you can also get eaten alive. All the restaurant needs to do is put "Servers get paid $2.50 per hour by this restaurant. A tip of 15% is customary for good service". End of problem.

Either that or they can build it into the price of the meal. I could care less either way, but there are answers why many don't tip well enough. Most of the time, it's ignorance. Sometimes it's just malice.

Unfortunately, it's one of those artefacts of American society and labour law that restaurants and similar can pay someone a reduced wage in the expectation that the workers will be tipped. The fact is there, and if one doesn't tip, one is essentially refusing to compensate someone else... it's perfectly legal, but you have to decide if it's right.

I'm very conscious of it, because when business is good I am making more money that those people, and they are working harder than I, and in many cases out of necessity, with little real love for what they do.

Some restaurants pool the tips and all waiters and waitresses get a pro rata share. I find that socialistic and reprehensible -- I like being rewarded commensurate with my achievements, and I especially like to reward someone whose efforts have pleased me.

I hate commissions too. Just pay employees a decent salary

Commissions are en excellent tool for motivating sales people, and most sales pros would have it no other way. In any business, the good salesman or saleslady will be one of the best rewarded people. I have known many salespeople who, through hard work and dedication to customer satisfaction, have earned more than their company's VPs or CFOs or CEOs.

Restaurant service people have to work just as hard as, say, people who sell professional services, high-tech equipment, machine tools, or business jets; and they do it for those few dollars customers throw on the table or scrawl on the credit-card tab.

Something completely different -- I wonder if part of the poor tipping that has the people on that wesite so irritated, is simply that many celebs are innumerate, and find calculating a 15% tip an unbearable burden. It's easy to see some of the mentioned celebs going into brainlock in the attempt.
