I completely agree with you that there's a limit that Republicans can gain making this an election issue, both the trip in particular and Michelle in general. They can, however, tie Michelle's behaviors with small government philosophy. After all, she's spending tax-payer money.

The argument against 'too much government' can be made on two grounds: economic and liberty. Framing Michelle's behavior in terms of spending will strike the cord of limited government on economic ground.
