The election was one step in restoring dignity and honor to Congress
Liberty Ledger ^ | Dec. 21, 2010 | James H. Shott

The election last month, when voters sent dozens of incumbents packing and gave Republicans a gain of 63 seats in the House of Representatives and six in the Senate, was a strong repudiation of the elitism displayed by our Congress, particularly since 2008. Yet, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and more than a few of their fellow travelers in Congress did not change their way of doing things.

Last week we saw a repeat of last year’s debacle over health care reform in which the aforementioned Congressional leaders pushed through a monstrous 2,300-page, secretly conceived bill that almost nobody had read and that the American people strongly opposed.

This time, Congress disserved us by producing a bill of 1,924 pages, but again no one had time to read it before the leadership wanted to act on it, and this one would have spent $1.2 trillion dollars that we don’t have with more than a smattering of pork greasing the skids toward Congressional approval.

Members were not the least bit hesitant to throw in billions of dollars of self-serving spending, much of which was political bribery to encourage other members to support a bill they otherwise might not support, and the rest to payoff votes in future elections.

Electing good people isn’t enough. We still need to stand over them with a whip and we can’t be afraid to use it.

Coburn (OK) is stepping up again. He is fighting against the machine. I respect his stand.

When the tea party express came through here in October, my soon to be congressman elect (Tim Walberg) said he doesn’t want us to expect him to do the right thing. He wants us to stand over him and make sure he does the right thing.

One other thing is that people should not assume that the headline getters are the only ones doing the right thing. Sometimes congressmen do the right things quietly.

I’ve been out of town and disconnected myself from news. Since yesterday I have seen Coburn (OK), twice on FNC speaking cogently about stopping the spending. They are trying to rake him over the coals on 9-11 responders, yet he asks where did the original spending go.............NO ONE ANSWERS

Politics corrupts, so they bear close watching.

The pathetic example of representation by the Infamous 8 RINOs during this past weekend’s DADT vote, and the Nefarious 9 who will give 0bama and Putin their START treaty victory are evidence as to why.

Author is correct. This is the First Step.

The cycle is 8 years. Each election through a 6 year Senate lifetime, plus one more cycle to get those who snuck through this year.

Don't be discouraged, but it won't be easy. Washington is like a cancer on Principle. We need to hold up everyone to high standards.

When referring to Congress, “dignity” and “honor” cannot be used in the same sentence. “Twenty years to life” can be used in the same sentence and is far more appropriate for this band of thieves.
