Senate may return to guns (Gun control bill this Summer?)

The 113th Congress is not done with its debate over guns and background checks.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid hinted on Tuesday that his chamber may vote on the bipartisan gun background checks bill again this year — and said such a law could have prevented a mass shooting in Las Vegas.

In the wake of the killing of two police officers in Nevada in a shooting that ultimately left five people dead including the shooters, Reid made the case that since the Senate’s bipartisan background check legislation died last spring, there’s been little slowdown in the number of high-profile instances of gun violence.

“Very few days go by that we don’t have these killings. The man in Las Vegas — clearly from what I’ve been able to read — was a felon. He couldn’t have bought a gun if he had background checks,” Reid told reporters on Tuesday afternoon.

Asked whether that means the Senate would take back up the legislation from Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) that failed last year, Reid replied: “I wouldn’t be surprised if we have another vote on it.”(continued)

The best quote is at the end:

"“Whatever he wants to do,” McCain said of Reid."

If I were a politician in 2014, I’d be pushing to disarm the peasants too.

At least the guy on the right is practicing gun safety by keeping his finger off of the trigger.

Man, the democrats really want to shoot themselves in the foot again...

Harry must have been at home and found his personal stash of embalming fluid...

BTW, Toomey??? How’d he fare in his last election??? I wonder if the people in his district have the courage to tell him to stay away from this, this time???

If the people in district 7 in Virginia can toss out the trash, then it should make for some republicans to tread softly...

Someone on our side with a brain needs to ask the pro-'background check' side to articulate what they honestly believe a background check constitutues: What it 'is', specifically, and what they think it actually accomplishes.

It's all based upon whatever government-issued ID card the prospective buyer hands over to the merchant at the gun counter. That ID card data is run through the Federal 'National Instant-Check System' (NICS). If there's no denial on record for the identity of the ID card at the time the check is run, the sale may proceed. That's how it works.

That ID card used for the NICS check is most commonly a state-issued driver's license. Hell, some states give those out to anyone who stumbles through the door of the Department of Motor Vehicles and signs a paper saying that they've already had a driver's license in some other state. You don't have to have a background check to get a driver's license. Even illegal aliens have them in whatever name they invented on the spot at the DMV.

Ultimately, this all means that some long-nailed minor public employee named 'LaFawnduh' at random DMV office is basically our nation's entire 'background check' for firearms sales.

To hear liberals talk, they think that there's some 'Department of Background Checks' that unerringly has a repository on every human being now living in America, whether they're legal citizens or not, whether they're mentally imbalanced, and whether they're felons, and whether they're who they say they are.

If liberals want to strengthen background checks, I'm all for it. I even recommend printing "FELON" in giant red letters on the drivers licenses of ex-cons. Last I heard though is that just a few weeks ago they wanted to prevent employers from discovering job applicant's criminal records because of all the African-American men who can't get jobs because of their rap sheet. Somehow, they think they can have that but at the same time have a central repository of criminals who shouldn't be allowed to purchase guns at a sporting goods store.

Just. Flippin'. Berserk.

And don't even get me started on how liberals will shield the mentally ill from being added to a database somewhere. Almost every recent shooter since Gabby Giffords was a person who should have been wearing a strait-jacked in the looney bin yet was able to fly right through a NICS check.

I'm not against 'background checks'. They just presently don't do jack shit, but for some reason liberals think they do. Sure, if they want to 'strengthen background checks', then put it up on the web. Let Americans see who the felons and lunatics that belong in the booby hatch are in their community.

I bet the liberals will run from this proposal faster than you can say 'background check'.

I hope there's a Republican out there with the ear of an interested elected GOP politician in Washington DC who is reading this and will pass it along.

Someone tell me how they plan to go out and retrieve the 500 million firearms and trillions of rounds of ammunition already in civilian hands. Bueller? Bueller?

The anti-gun zealots don’t even pretend to explain the non-connection between background checks and virtually every one of the multiple victim shootings in public venues that have occurred.
To cite just one of the worst, the Newtown Mass school shooter didn’t even own the guns he used.
But its really about harassing and restricting the liberties of lawful, non-criminal gun owners/users.

I guess Harry doesn't want to be in charge of the Senate anymore. If he wants to mobilize a huge number of folks for the November Election to vote out Democrat Senators, all he needs to do is to try to pass some kind of gun legislation.
