U.S. Sen. John McCain laughed at the possibility that former Alaska governor Sarah Palin may challenge him in the 2016 election.
After dropping hints that he was considering retiring, the 78-year-old Arizona Republican is now expected to announce that he will run for a sixth term to the dismay of many conservatives.
And while he expects to see a primary challenger, the moderate lawmaker is certain it will not be Palin.
Oh, thats foolish, McCain told The Arizona Republic. Sarah and I have maintained a very close and warm relationship. Thats just not in the realm of possibility.
McCain is largely responsible for Palins rise from obscurity, after choosing her to be his running mate in the 2008 presidential election.
Palin maintains a part-time residence in Scottsdale, and mythical tea party leaders see her as the fantasy candidate to challenge McCain, according to the The New York Times.
The Arizona Republican Party formally censured McCain early this year over his consistently liberal voting record, and conservatives in the party are vying to field a viable candidate to challenge him in the primary.
I know that they will do everything they can to recruit somebody, but I can promise you its not Sarah Palin, McCain said.
Considering she campaigned for McCain in 2010 and spoke on his behalf after he was censured, according to The Republic, McCain is likely correct.
In a recent interview, Palin did not rule out running for office in some capacity in 2016, but was more excited about her reality TV show, Amazing America with Sarah Palin, having been renewed for a second season. Watch the segment here:

I’ll bet McCain was on the telephone so fast after that interview, calling Sarah up and asking, beseeching her for information. “Is there any truth to the rumors that you want me gone?, Hello? Sarah, answer me! This is The Maverick speaking! “
The writer wants us to think that McCain was laughing at Palin, rather than at something that he considers laughable, about the theory that she is going to run for his seat in Arizona.
Can we just vote for an old rutabaga? Would be at least as useful and do far far far less harm.
He’s scared sh@tless of her running..
She would do better holding out for a presidential candidacy.
Force him out, Sarah, and Perry, too. Steve Schmidt doomed you both, doom Steve’s new project right back at him.
Something is UP.
You have a link for that?
I doubt Palin would bother with this.
Whoever ends up challenging this doddering old fool in the primary will certainly get a check from me.
Love that Picture!
Merry Christmas!
Thank you for the sweet Christmas wishes.
This has been a tough one.
G-d bless and keep you.
Just my "less than" 2 cents worth.
The senate is filled with former governors. Hardly a stepdown. Less decision making influence but control over trillions in spending, national attention and lifetime benefits.
He's largely responsible for her being shot down in flames ever since, too. She owes him nothing.
My husband was the youngest in the class of ‘58 the Great’.
McCain sure has great genes. He’s still alive and IIRC his Mom is 102.
BUMP
Sarah is responsible for McCain not being completely embarrassed in his halfhearted and mismanaged 2008 run for the Presidency.
