Perry tells tea party group he was right to back Dewhurst over Cruz in 2012 primary

Says loyalty bound him to his lieutenant governor, says more of this quality is needed in US politics.

Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry told a tea party group Sunday that he supported his lieutenant governor against Ted Cruz in the 2012 Republican primary for the U.S. Senate out of loyalty — a characteristic, he said, that is sorely missing in American politics.

During a conference call hosted by Tea Party Patriots, Mr. Perry said he endorsed then-Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst because of the strong relationship they had developed over the years.

“If nothing else, I am a principled, disciplined and loyal man,” Mr. Perry said in response to a question. “David Dewhurst had been the lieutenant governor of Texas for eight years. He had been a very good partner as we helped create the most dynamic economy and when David announced that he was going to run and asked me if I would support him, I had only one answer, and that was, ‘Yes sir I will because you have been a staunch supporter of mine and the vision we had for Texas, and I will put that vision up against anyone.’”

He added, “I happen to count loyalty as one of the great traits that all too often in this business, you don’t see.”(continued)

Of all Perry’s shortcomings, not supporting Cruz in this instance is not one of them. I am all in on Cruz, but IF the facts and timeline are as Perry says, I don’t have a problem with it. Heck, Sarah had to held her nose and supported Juan McCain for the same reason.

Too, often though, personal loyalty and party loyalty are just another way of ensuring pay-back. If that was Rick’s motive, then I agree with the other posters: FURP.

Perry is also likely expecting some of Dewhurst’s millions for his POTUS run against Cruz.

Good ol’ boy network is correct. Love my state, really like Cruz, can’t stand Rick Perry. He’s the wrong kind of Texan for me, speaks out of both sides of his mouth and is completely establishment.

Perry’s problems mirror Scott Walker. Both are strong state executives, but are coyly straddling the fence between the Tea Party and the establishment.

So who the hell does Perry think he owes loyalty to now? Hillary? Obviously not his fellow Texan Ted Cruz.

Perry, you go toward the GOPe and you’re going nowhere...you’re NOT THEIR BOY. And you’re not the conservative populace’s boy now either.

Ted Cruz will call out the fence sitters. I just listened today to his whole speech at Liberty University. It wasn’t perfect, but it was very effective. Then, after setting the table, he said that for all the reasons he had just mentioned, he was announcing his candidacy. VERY EFFECTIVE.

Was word of this leaked widely before his appearance? I haven’t heard.

In any event, there will be no weaseling this primary season, you are either a constitutional conservative, or you are not. The enemy, like ISIS will be called what it is.

I prefer Cruz to Perry, but loyalty and a reputation for keeping your commitments to allies who don’t agree with you on everything is how things in government get done.

What I don’t see in the article is whether or not
Perry supported/endorsed Cruz in the general election?
To support his Lt Gov doesn’t seem unreasonable
unless the guy is a douchebag. And, now that he and
Ted are potential rivals for the POTUS primary I get the
recent swipe.

Texas Freepers, what do you say?

(BTW, I prefer Cruz over Perry)

I watched his speech live while visiting Texas. It was pre-announced that he was going declare he was running for president at that speech.

1. I think Rick Perry deserves credit for consolidating GOP control of Texas and for being a good governor. He was Texas’s longest serving Governor.

2. I am looking forward to an even better Governor now that Greg Abbott is at the helm.

3. Yes, Rick made some mistakes, endorsed some really dumb ideas. Each time when his chain was jerked for it, he listened to reason.

4. Yes, Rick was once a Democrat. (I never was, and I grew up 14 miles from the Perrys.)

5. I was never a Dewhurst fan. I’ve never met him, but a family member has been around him a lot.

6. Rick is no longer Governor of TX. I am looking forward to Texas leading the nation in removing the stench of Obama in our collective nostrils. Removing every trace of his smelly slimy existence in the US government.

Surely, there is some enemy we can spend our time exposing that merits this space and effort.
