John Lewis: Take down Georgia’s U.S. Capitol statue of Confederate V.P.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | June 25, 2015 | Daniel Malloy

As the nation debates the placement of Confederate battle flags, Atlanta Democratic U.S. Rep. and civil rights legend John Lewis said it’s high time to take a look at the statues under the U.S. Capitol dome, starting with one of Georgia’s.

“I think it should move, be removed,” Lewis said in an interview Wednesday. “I think there will be other symbols, not just from Georgia but other parts of our country [that are removed]. … It’s the beginning of a movement that will help us move toward the realization that we’re one people, we’re one nation and we have to be sensitive to our own history.”

Crawfordville native Alexander H. Stephens served in Georgia’s legislature and the U.S. Congress as a Whig, a Democrat and a Constitutional Unionist. After the state seceded, he was selected as the vice president of the Confederacy, even though he had been a staunch unionist.

In March 1861, Stephens delivered what is known as the “Cornerstone Speech” in Savannah, laying out the reasons for secession. According to a local newspaper account, it included this ugly passage:

“Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests upon the great truth, that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery — subordination to the superior race — is his natural and normal condition.”(continued)

  Can I have it?

Yes, I have a comment...

I propose to John Lewis, if he wants to be consistent, that he remove the name of the well known racist president Woodrow Wilson from all schools, roads, federal buildings and other public places.

Should he concur, I will agree to consider his request.

But he is a democrat.

We cannot say it enough. Nearly every officer in the confederacy and nearly every segregationist during the civil rights era was a democrat. The confederate flag is the democrat flag.

In my fading memory, I think it is still not quite as bad as it was in 1968-69

” It’s the beginning of a movement that will help us move toward the realization that we’re one people, we’re one nation and we have to be sensitive to our own history.”

Nice words, but why do people of his race avoid whites, seek to shoot and kill whites and do everything in their power to cause pain and inconvenience to whites?

I am sure that McConnell, Bevin, Graham, Reibus and others will come and stand with Lewis for this.

Feeding frenzy on Southern, I so not see any leader anywhere with the leadership to stand up to them. We have a gazillion people running for the GOP nomination... opportunity is knocking for all of them.

This kind of thing won’t unite us and will likely cause anger where there was none. It’s sure starting to piss me off.

John Lewis is just fine with the murder of aprox 70 million children since 1972, he is fine with the anti Christian Democrat party platform....where is the outrage?

Here we have a group of people, Black`s that were terribly terribly treated in slave days, now they are free (thank God) what do they do in return....They vote to bring murder and terror on the most vulnerable unborn children??

Blacks as a group, had the ability to prevent the murders of these children had they only spoke up.

Yes Catholic Democrats and Protestant Democrats could have prevented the murders and anti Christian rulings of Supreme Courts as well.

You would think that Black`s experiencing so much injustice from slavery etc, would be the first to try and stop the slaughter of another more vulnerable group, but they just dont seem to care, and they had such a rich Christian heritage at one point, now they have no problem at all voting for a whole host of anti Christian issues

There may need to be a purge of monuments on the mall.

“I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races - that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything.”
-Fourth Debate with Stephen A. Douglas at Charleston, Illinois, September 18, 1858 (The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln edited by Roy P. Basler, Volume III, pp. 145-146.)

What about the A.H. Stephens State Park and the Confederate Museum. Do you want those “removed” also.

Should Stephens home, “Liberty Hall” be turned back into the boarding house it was in 1922?

Atlanta is famous for the multiplicity of streets named “Peachtree”, perhaps is needs a dozen or more named for MLK, Jr., for Andrew Young, for, perhaps, John Lewis?
