Trump GOP Candidacy Blows Up: Refuses to Rule Out Third Party Bid (Bushies "We've finally got him")
The Weekly Standard ^ | July 18, 2015 | Stephen F. Hayes

Ames, Iowa - Donald Trump confirmed two things during a stop in this central Iowa town Saturday: He has no class and he may well run as an independent when he does not win the Republican nomination.

There had been considerable public evidence of both long before his appearance here today at the Family Leader Summit but Trump, who is leading several national polls of the Republican primary, erased any doubt with comments he made about Senator John McCain and a prospective independent bid.

Trump was answering questions from Republican pollster Frank Luntz on stage when he declared that John McCain, who spent six years as a POW in Vietnam, was not a war hero. Trump went on to express his preference for soldiers who weren’t captured, suggesting a belief that prisoners of war have some say in their captivity. Luntz had asked Trump about his reaction to McCain’s comment that Trump had stirred up the “crazies” with his candidacy. When Trump attacked McCain, Luntz asked if Trump was comfortable with that kind of criticism of a war hero.

“He’s not a war hero,” said Trump. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.” The comments clearly shocked the crowd at the summit, some of whom reacted with boos and shouts of condemnation.

McCain was shot down flying combat missions in Vietnam on October 26, 1967. He was taken captivity with a broken right leg and fractures in both arms. He was beaten and tortured repeatedly, in part because his father commanded the U.S. Navy in the Pacific....

McCain enlisted in the marines and was a POW for 6 years.

Trump got five deferments and one was for a foot problem. Who is the coward now?

Most of those “supposed” beneficiaries of Obamacare will be less and less thrilled as the premiums skyrocket. Young people don’t need a lot of medical insurance and voluntary catastrophic policies with medical savings accounts would be an easy replacement.

I thought Trump wanted single payer?

“Trump has elevated Bush, ensured McCain another term and moved Cruz back in the bus....betters had warned about this POS but the “well he is telling the truth” gang refused to examine this a$$hole.”

Agree with every word you said. Not all of us here were suckers. God help us when Trump runs 3rd party.

McCain was in the Navy, not the Marines.

Marines should be capitalized. Are you slighting my service in the Corps?

Of course not. Trump put his foot in his mouth, but I don’t think he was trying to insult Vets or POWs in general. He’s not a military man and doesn’t get military culture. Clinton dodged the draft with a vengeance and he still became President. Strange things happen.

It’s true that media and GOPe insanity may carry the day, but I hardly think that trump was insulting anybody but McCain. McCain has used his POW status as a shield from criticism for a long time. Perhaps it still works, we shall see.

The Premium Increases will be blamed on the Greedy Health Insurance Companies, not the Dear Leader.

Those same People would howl at losing their Subsidies, and the Obamacare enabled Medicaid will howl about losing their Health Coverage completely.

In his Phoenix Speech, Trump talked about Free Market solutions such as allowing Healthcare Companies to compete over State Lines, the same thing Republicans have been saying for Years, with the usual lack of results.

That doesn’t sound like Single Payer, but both Medicare and Medicaid are essentially Single Payer already.

I don’t know what Trump has said since, but I watched this part of the video. What it looks like to me is Trump is starting a thought and says “He’s not...” then interrupts himself because of what had just been said to him and begins another thought “A war hero” in preparation for his remarks about that.

Continuing he says “He’s a war hero because he was captured” twice. Then he says “And I believe... perhaps he’s a war hero.”

What I heard in the audience reaction was as much, if not more, laughter as booing.

I’m not a huge Trump fan, but I’m not seeing this from the same angle that the article is. For my part, I have no problem recognizing McCain as a war hero and for his service in the Senate. But he has been a RINO as far back as I can remember.

No disrespect. I am a little old lady who has zero military experience. Thank you for your service.

Ma’am, of course I don’t think you were being disrespectful. I merely was illustrating a point.

Trump is about the same as Obama in this, they don’t get the military culture and as a consequence, they are going to say and do stupid stuff that can be taken as insulting.

The difference is that I think Trump respects Vets, and Obama thinks of them as props or tools.

Trump was trying to say to the proctor that POW status doesn’t put you beyond criticism. He did it in a stupid, inartful way.

It may well derail him, and then we get either Hillary or Jeb. Perhaps Cruz can pick up the pieces, but as much as I like Ted Cruz I fear that he’ll be found ineligible for the office if elected. He was born in Canada.

mcinsane was a spoiled brat son of an admiral and an incompetent pilot and was shot down while flying below ordered altitude.that is what was revealed by his comrades.there is the little matter of his having destroyed a couple other planes and almost a carrier.anyone else would have been removed from flight status.

mcinsane hasn’t shown hero status unless you mean hero to leftists.

wearing a uniform doesn’t confer hero status.some of my schoolmates went into the Army rather than go to jail.some came back even more messed up.

The subsidies are for the most part for insurance they don’t need. If they buy more realistic, affordable policies they won’t need the subsidies. Let them deduct premiums directly from income tax owed and remove restrictions on the type of policies offered. In other words let the markets work.

I wonder if Trump has really studied the issue? I would be surprised if he has.

Trump is a Godsend. He raises issues that the RNC doesn’t want anything to do with and forces the field to address them. And like you said, he hits the msm hard. But he makes unforced errors. He should have gone after McCain on the gang of eight plutocracy crap and slammed his ass on amnesty instead of engendering sympathy for his days as a pow. But you get the whole Trump. The brilliant street fighter and the guy with the site Johnson.

True heroes never brag and never allow anyone to tout them as a hero.

A lot of people hate McCain and Trump just gave them a reason to call McCain a fraud which he is.

During this past day there have been several several sons and daughters of true heroes of WWII, Korea who have spoken up that their hero fathers never spoke about their bravery for which they were given medals, never allowed anyone to call them a hero and always said there were many heros on the battlefield and the true heroes never returned.

McCain has no honor in him. If he was honorable he would IMMEDIATELY WITHOUT HESITATION agree with Trump and say that he himself is no hero, that much finer men and women than he committed heroic acts and they deserve to be called heroes especially the ones that died while committing acts of heroism.

But McCain would never do the honorable thing because he’s a fraud. And Trump called him on it.

Trump was responding to McCain calling those thousands who turned out to see Trump speak as “crazies”.

Trump is right.

You should direct your anger at McCain and stop judging others for remarks about true heroism because you are no hero yourself nor do you attract thousands and thousands of patriotic Americans who McCain calls “crazies”.

And Trump is not alone.

Admiral Stockdale who was the Commanding Officer of all POWs in the Hanoi Hilton NOT ONCE cited McCain for heroism nor did he ever describe or speak of any particular heroism on the part of McCain.

NcCain’s so-called heroism is a lie perpetrated by the media and allowed by McCain to circulate.

McCain is a LIAR.

Trump is telling the truth. And that’s why he’s leading in the polls.

> “What if CRUZ/TRUMP jump on a third party ticket!!!!!!”

They can do it and win. Many think it will be Perot deja-vu all over again; they would be wrong.

Since 1992 the electorate has changed and since 2012 there has been a seldom reported sea change in voter registration affiliations.

In 2008, 24% of the electorate identified themselves as Independent. After 2012 and by 2014 that number leaped to 42% of the electorate identifying themselves as Independent. That is an ENORMOUS change and 2/3s of those 42% identify themselves as conservatives with most of the rest as moderates or leaning conservative..

As a result of this huge growth in the ranks of Independents, there remain only 27% republican affiliated and 31% democrat affiliated. Of the 27% republican registered, 18% are conservative base and the rest moderate or establishment, and the conservative base are mostly following Cruz and now Trump. Of the democrats 31%, 8% are Latino-Americans and 5% are Reagan democrats. Cruz will take 40% of the Latino vote (as he did in TX) and all of the Reagan democrats or will share them with Trump.

Cruz has also tapped into the 17 million conservative Americans that don’t bother to register or vote because they see a one-party system and correctly determine that the candidates offered represent the same oligarchs. So they withdraw and stay quiet until they have had contact in town halls with Ted Cruz. Now they are fired up.

There is no danger of a Perot-like splinter of the GOP. There is the very real possibility that Cruz/Trump takes 28% as Independents, 3% Latino-Americans, 5% of Reagan democrats, up to 18% of the GOP conservative base and millions more who are inspired for the first time in a generation to register and show up to vote.

No matter how it is sliced, Cruz/Trump leave the democrats and GOP at a loss in a 3-way race. The only way to stop this confluence of political realities is to dream that the democrats and republicans will merge officially <— NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

The bushies didn’t get him. his inability to control the deranged crap that comes out of his mouth got him.

I've said it at least a dozen times on here already: Trump's lack of discipline (running off with the mouth, shooting from the hip..) would be his undoing.

If this one gaffe doesn't derail his campaign just wait -- he'll make more. Eventually he'll say enough that he'll erode his own support.

Yea Trump will sometimes say these things, but you know what, it was McCain who opened his mouth first and called thousands of his supporters “crazies”. So Trump responds. Fine...whatever

All I know is this, Trump will support our men and women in uniform, and Trump will fight to close the border to Mexico and our best hope to stem the tide of Islamic vermin pouring in.
