Hand-Wringing in G.O.P. After Donald Trump’s Remarks on Megyn Kelly
The New York Times ^ | August 8, 2015 | Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Martin

Donald J. Trump’s suggestion that a Fox News journalist had forcefully questioned him at the Republican presidential debate because she was menstruating cost him a speaking slot Saturday night at an influential gathering of conservatives in Atlanta. It also raised new questions about how much longer Republican Party leaders would have to contend with Mr. Trump’s disruptive presence in the primary field.

With Mr. Trump at center stage, the event Thursday shattered television viewership records for primary debates: Nearly 24 million people watched. But any hopes that he would try to reinvent himself inside the Cleveland arena as a sober-minded statesman, or that he would collapse under scrutiny and tough questions, vaporized in the opening minutes.

By the weekend, as Mr. Trump’s latest eruption rippled through Republican circles, the conversation had turned to whether the party, and his rival presidential contenders, should continue to accommodate his candidacy, quietly hoping that this would be the moment he burned out — or should try to run him out on a rail...

“I think there is a definite movement to drive Trump into a third party candidacy. Hillary is assured of election. Especially since Trump has warned RINOS that if he is not treated right he will bolt. We may be victims of a real conspiracy!”

We also know Trump spoke by phone to Bill Clinton shortly before he announced for president. This would be Trump’s most famous “deal” if he broke from the party and ran independent and by that action, all by himself, assured Hillary’s election. He wants attention always, to be at the center of a deal, and he could crow forever he is responsible for Hillary’s election, meaning he got the whole country to do his will.

What you say is not impossible. Historically Trump is to America as Crassus was to Rome. Who will be our Caesar?

“He’s got 32% support in the GOP now.”

The highest poll I’ve seen has him at 26. Strong support yes, but that’s a significant difference.

“The support from conservative candidates is going to choose Trump over the GOPe candidates. So Cruz, Huckabee, Fiorina, probably Carson’s support is going to go Trump.”

Aren’t you forgetting another possibility? Sure, support for those candidates could go to Trump, and probably would before a GOPe candidate. but it could instead coalesce around one of the conservative candidates. Considering that Trump’s conservative bona fides are....suspect....at best, that seems more likely to me.

I just don’t see Trump’s support growing very much from where it is today. I think he has deep support from among his supporters, but not much appeal to others.

Trump told MSNBC he spoke by phone with Clinton after he decided. Also, my thoughts are that the Republican party would rather lose the election (like L. Graham said) than have Trump in there getting rid of the money making corrupt deals. CNN asked Jeffrey Lord why Cruz won’t criticize Trump and he said he believes they have made some kind of agreement.

Maybe I’m naive but I didn’t think anything bad about the blood reference Trump made.

But I blame all of this on Trump. His treatment by Megyn should have lasted hours. But when it happened, I just knew it would be in the news cycle for days because he would not be able to let it go.

He should have laughed off the debate comment and set it aside.

Hopefully if Trump is the next President he will buy out the NYT and fire the entire place. Then burn down the contaminated building. If Cruz wins he would probably not be able to buy the NYT but he could crush it.

"Hand-Wringing in G.O.P..." is pretty much a 24x7 occupation for the GOPe types looking for any opportunity to stab conservatives in the back.

I've been a Trump supporter from the beginning, not because I like him, but because he seemed like the best tool available to break the Washington Cartel and Government-Media Complex.

But, it's certain he has suffered great damage here and it's all of his own doing.

So, if not Trump to kill the GOPe and it's associated donors and media sycophants, WHO?

Who else does need donor money?

Trump did not say Megyn was on the rag, just acting like it. But the way she acts you would think she was always on the rag.
