While Trump Whirls and Rages, Cruz Stays the Course
The Fiscal Times ^ | August 11, 2015 | Martin Matishak and Eric Pianin

As the controversy rages over the fallout from Donald Trump’s outlandish comments about Fox News debate moderator Megyn Kelly and many of his Republican presidential rivals demand his apology, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) looks like the cat who swallowed the canary.

No one really thinks that Trump, the real estate tycoon and reality TV showman, has peaked since suggesting that Kelly was having her period when she peppered Trump Thursday night about his numerous past misogynistic quips. A new Reuters poll found him leading among Republican voters after the debate with 24 percent, compared to 12 percent for former Florida Governor Jeb Bush.

As brash, bombastic Trump’s White House bid begins to show signs of wear and tear, Cruz stands poised to inherit some of Trump’s momentum and apply it in new ways that could potentially wreak havoc on the Republican brand in the fall. Cruz has been careful not to criticize Trump in any way, even as other candidates including Bush and Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina have denounced him as a blight on the party who should get out of the race.

While the crowded, 17-member GOP field has obsessed on the damage that Trump has done to the party by alienating Hispanics and women voters, an effervescent Cruz has raked in $1.1 million and embarked on a seven state southern swing this week. He seems to be positioning himself for a possible Trump stumble that would free up some of his hard-right conservative following.

Discounting any suggestion that he is salivating over the prospects of picking up some crumbs that might fall from Trump’s table, Cruz told MSNBC on Monday that “I’m making a play to pick up the supporters of every other candidate in this race.”(continued)

“We’re running a primary where our object is to unify Republicans,” he said. “I don’t think it is beneficial to the party or the country for us to be bickering like a bunch of children.”

-Ted Cruz (the adult in the race).

Those aren't qualifications, that's a list of campaign promises aka, rhetoric.

Please list lifelong liberal Donald Trump's qualifications. Hint: campaign promises ain't it.

Trump is a shill for the Clintons. His job is to divide the republican vote so Hitlary can win. Nothing more, nothing less. He will go independent soon to suck votes away from any Republican candidate, guaranteeing a win for cankles.

Is that before or after her #s hit bottom and she is surpassed by Lincoln Chafee?

Interesting theories in post 29 I cannot think of a better way to throw the Lamestream media and the dirty Dems a better curveball... Than to throw someone like Trump at them. Gets them off their game.

That’s not what Cruz does, he confronts it head on.
Exactly. Cruz took on Mitch McConnell in the senate and fought the fight against funding Obamacare that so many Republicans lacked the spine to fight.

And his charismna, leadership and sound arguments were so overwhelming, it wasn’t funded, right? Oh, never mind.

Bush avoided conflict. That’s not what Cruz does, he confronts it head on.

He confronts it with logic, reason, and superb debate skills. He'll quote the Constitution and draw upon his vast legal and government experience and craft a masterful argument.

The Dem candidate and the media will smirk and utter two words: "You're racist"

.............and he'll be finished.

He'll do what Republicans have been doing for years. He'll say, "I'm not a racist, let me explain why......"

That crap won't work with Trump. We don't need another pansy from the debate team. We need a butt kicker.

I like Cruz. I really do. I agree with everything he says. I've observed him, listened to him, watched him during debates, in the Senate, interviews, etc.

Cruz is a great guy. We don't need a great guy. Hillary and the media would tear him apart.

We need a fighter. A warrior. A jerk.

We're not going to out-debate the Liberals. We're not going to win with our philosophy, our morals, prayer, quoting the Constitution, or any of that crap.

We're going to win by making the Liberals hurt more than we do. We're going to win by completely destroying them.

Remember: Liberals already control everything. EVERYTHING. They don't have to debate.

Trump is willing and able to fight back.

Look up "Senate Majority Leader" or have someone explain to you the power he has in comparison to that of 1 of the other 99 senators.

And understand if you can that it wasn't Ted Cruz who endorsed Mitch McConnell for reelection for "Speaker" of the senate, that would have been lifelong liberal Donald Trump.

Who is the better man, the man who endorsed RINO turd Mitch McConnell or the man who fought against him?

Trump is an asshole who says stupid crap that stir morons to follow him. FReepers are openly calling for him to be elected and be a dictator.

Some of you people are scary stupid.

Once again - Cruz is the only candidate that isn’t afraid of Trump’s presence and activities or of how his following ballooned from nothing to a bunch in zero time. Cruz is planning for the real fight and I believe he will outperform even my biased estimates.

He has not much clue about the constitution, framework of the U.S. government, personal liberties e.t.c.

A growing number of Trump fans don't much care for the constitution. In this thread you can find them happily calling for him to be elected dictator.

7 REASONS CONSERVATIVES SHOULD KISS DONALD'S RING

It ain't pretty. They want a dictator to bomb countries and take what they want.

Sen. Cruz was such a smart, mature candidate not to trash Mr. Trump when he was under fire.

He is my favorite, and I recently got to ask him a question about the Corker amendment. He went right into his analytical explanatory mode and gave me a detailed explanation, even though he was just talking to me.

Super guy, bright future, real conservative!

I hate to break it to you guys. Cruz is unelectable as president. Maybe as VP, but I doubt that too. Donald’s hair has more charisma than Cruz.

I agree, largely, at this point in time. However, Cruz is young and can be on scene for a couple of decades.

Cruz, against the aged, concussed, criminal Hillary would be exciting to see. However, I don't think Hillary will be the nominee.

What would you think about a Trump/Cruz ticket?

I do doubt Cruz’s ability to be elected president. That is not trolling. His appeal is limited to his base with few signs that it can expand beyond that.

I’ll tell you who I am. I’m a guy who pulled the lever for McCain in 08 and held my nose. I swore I’d never vote again after that. But then when I saw who Obama turned out to be, I pulled the lever for Romney in 12 and felt nauseated about it. Again, I swore I’d never vote again, but voted straight Republican ticket in 14, thinking that at least those Bozos up there might slow Obama down. But once I saw that the Republicans actually expedited Obama’s policies after taking House and Senate, I swore to myself: Never, ever, ever will I vote again. Period.

Then came Trump. Now I have a reason to vote again and it feels good. Damn good. There are a lot of people like me. People that the Republican party has finally lost. We’re voting Trump. We’re not voting Republican.

Its later than you think.
