Mike Huckabee slams GOP rival Ted Cruz for saying gay marriage is state-by-state issue

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee is letting US Senator Ted Cruz have it.

Huckabee, trailing badly in the polls in the race for their party’s presidential nomination, took to Twitter on Wednesday (23 December) to slam the higher-polling Cruz for saying that same-sex marriage is a state-by-state issue.

‘If marriage and sanctity of life are truly issues of principle-not politics-there shouldn’t be geographical boundaries to what’s right and wrong,’ Huckabee tweeted.

At a fundraiser held on 9 December at the Sullivan & Cromwell law firm on Madison Avenue, Cruz said to a group fiscally conservative but mostly socially liberal Republicans: ‘People of New York may well resolve the marriage question differently than the people of Florida or Texas or Ohio. … That’s why we have 50 states — to allow a diversity of views.’

Cruz was asked if fighting same-sex marriage is a top three priority for him.

He said it is not.

‘I would say defending the Constitution is a top priority,’ he said. ‘And that cuts across the whole spectrum – whether it’s defending (the) First Amendment, defending religious liberty, stopping courts from making public policy issues that are left to the people.’

In his Twitter rant, Huckabee asked: ‘Should conservatives support a corporately-funded candidate that says one thing at a Manhattan fundraiser and another at a Marshaltown church? Shouldn’t candidates be expected to have authenticity and consistency, instead of looking at a map to decide what to believe and what to say?’

He added: ‘Whether you agree with him, one reason I respect Trump: he doesn’t pretend with his principles or change his message depending on location/audience.’

Maybe Ted should read the constitution to Mike, like he used to do for the Rotary, Lions and Kiwanis groups.

But Ted Cruz is "sneaking around" and telling the evil 1 percenters something completely different than what he's telling the rest of us. /s

Mike, there’s are things in the Constitution called Article I, Section 8 and the Tenth Amendment that limit the reach of the Federal Government. Try reading them sometime.

This is where Huckabee goes off the rails every time. Murder, theft, kidnapping — all immoral acts — are also issues left to the states. The federal government dictating on high is the problem, not the solution.

Huckabee is the Nanny-stater who wants to ban smoking at the federal level. What else would you expect from him?

While I agree with Mr. Huckabee in principle, short of the states amending the Constitution to expressly prohibit any kind of marriage other than traditional one man, one woman marrige, Sen. Cruzs 10th Amendment-based argument concerning marriage is the best we can do imo.

Insights welcome.

I guess Mr. 2% is getting some final shots in before he crashes, burns and exists after the caucuses in Iowa, at which point he can go back to selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door in Arkansas or whatever he was doing right before he entered the race.

he’s been pretty consistent with saying it’s a state issue.

Is marriage mentioned in the constitution?

I don’t think so. i’m embarrassed to say i’m not 100 percent sure.

but like he said on the tonight show, if something’s not mentioned in there, then send it to the states.

he’s right

and if marriage was once supported as a good thing for the community, nowadays the benefits you get from having one out of wedlock seem to have changed that notion for the worse.

This is the same issue that the audience booed Ted Cruz for on the Colbert show and then cheered him saying exactly the same with minimally different words.

he knows he wont be, so he spouts off.

I like Trump, but is he kidding with that statement?

Trump is saying a LOT of things differently than only a few years ago. I want to believe he means what he says now, but accusing Cruz is wrong.

He was whining recently because Evangelicals were not backing him.

Methinks the Green-Eyed Monster is clouding his judgment, if he ever had any.

And wasn’t he some kind of preacher once? Tsk Tsk

He was making half a mil / yr at Fox.

Not big money by coastal standards, but that’s decent dough in Arkansas.

I don’t understand what Huckabee is on about. The Constitution is very clear: whatever issues aren’t covered by this document go to the states and to the people. It’s not that difficult a concept to understand, Mike. lol

I agree with Huckabee, homosexual marriage is not a state issue any more than gun rights. Cruz played politics with this one and is being rightly called for it. Shame on him.

Hey Huck ... states rights. Oh, forgot. You’ve not read the Constitution before coming out with that stupid statement.
