If a single Trump supporter gets killed, I would not blame Trump for blaming Cruz and Kasich.

So yes, Cruz should call Trump and vow to aim his fire at the democrats, at muslims, at the border threat etc.
A non-hostile campaign would be excellent. But they should compete by energizing the base rather than by bashing each other. The time for ‘taking each other down’ is past due.
