Conservative icon Richard Viguerie, who endorsed Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) for President in December, is calling for an alliance between delegates supporting Cruz and Donald Trump to forestall efforts by GOP establishment party insiders to steal the nomination from one of the two anti-establishment candidates.
The 82-year-old direct mail fundraising trailblazer, who played a key role in developing the financial infrastructure that helped elect Ronald Reagan in 1980 and brought on the Newt Gingrich inspired Republican takeover of the House of Representatives in 1994, and co-author George Rasley, editor of CHQ.com urge Donald Trump and Ted Cruz delegates . . . to follow the lead of their compatriots in Tennessee by forming an alliance to ensure that the Republican National Convention nominates a conservative populist ticket.
Writing in the fourth and final installment of a series on what conservatives should do if Donald Trump wins the nomination, Viguerie and Rasley address this scenario....

I think that ship may have sailed.....
That made a lot of sense a few weeks back. But once “family” got brought into the mix, it’s now going to be a murder-suicide pact, and they are both likely going down. I don’t expect either to get the nomination.
Cruz was Vice-Chair of the NRSC when the Cochran fraud was presented.
Goldman Asley Cruz needs a rat for a VP like Willard.
Mr. Trump will chose someone of substance.
Agree. I used to support the idea of a joint ticket, and thought I’d vote for Cruz if he got the nomination.
No longer. I’m voting Trump, even if I have to write his name in.
Never going to happen. Trump wouldn’t want to bring on an illegal alien who’s hated by everyone and is mentally unstable, and Cruz wouldn’t want to join a guy who attacked his wife.
The delegates picked by the local Republican parties may not be up for such an alliance. They would be more loyal to the GOPe on a second round ballot.
There aren’t two “anti-establishment” candidates, as is clearly demonstrated by the continuing stream of establishment endorsements for Cruz.
Chris Christie endorsed Don Trump. Do you consider Christie an anti-establishment figure?
“Mr. Trump will chose someone of substance.”
That’s funny. Trump isn’t getting anywhere near the general election and neither is Cruz. The GOPe has already stated that and now that Cruz and Trump people are at each other’s throats, neither will support the other to overcome the establishments efforts.
It’s exactly what the GOPe and the rats wanted, and as your post indicates, you bought into it hook, line and sinker, as did people on the Cruz side.
Sit back and enjoy the show. You paid for it.
If Trump told his cultus that Cruz was now okay and to support him as VP nominee, they would fall in line and all of their current anti-Cruz animosity would instantly be forgotten. However, Cruz simply can’t accept a deal. Two or three months ago, it was possible. It’s not possible anymore. Too much bad blood, too many burnt bridges. A good portion of Cruz’s supporters would never forgive him for ‘selling out’ at this point.
State party elite along with local party people have some say so in the process.
It may vary from state to state.
aint gonna happen.
That’s one versus how many?
Only way to ensure Cruz wouldn’t get my vote, as well as that of everyone I know, is if he was part of a ticket with the orange raccoon on it.
Sadly, you may have a point.
I’m going to offer a contrarian view.
I think this may happen and it may have nothing to do with the opinion or desires of the candidates themselves.
The delegates are not robots and the candidates cannot tell them how to vote on subsequent ballots (though of course they have real influence).
If Trump is say 10-100 delegates short, he just needs a small percent of Cruz delegates to come over.
You might say no way, Cruz delegates hate Trump.
But I think a small percent would say we rather have Trump than have the establishment parachute in some guy with no delegates or very few to take it.
That small percent might be enough if the Trump delegates hold firm.
How will the RNC stop Trump if Cruz drops out and pledges his delegates for Trump before the first round of convention voting?
Cruz must be asked if he believes that the party establishment will back him if he forces a floor fight. If he says he does believe the party will support his second round bid, then he's fooling himself. They will use him to stop Trump and then cast him aside for their own self-interests.
This is politics, and the only thing that Cruz can count on is what he directly controls, and he does NOT control what the GOPe will do in round two no matter what they promise. They will turn on him before the echo of the round one closing gavel subsides.
If Cruz really thinks it is important to stop the Mcconnell lying wing of the Republican party, then his best bet now is to align with Trump and declare his delegate support for Trump.
If Cruz does this now, 1) he will instantly become the darling of the outsider movement, and 2) he will drastically change the current narrative of stopping Trump with a brokered convention. That story would become dead overnight instead of lingering on until July. The story will become the GOPe naked power grab, and they will lose control of that story quickly.
It's time for Cruz to have his Rubio moment, and step up to do the right thing.
At this point, Cruz cannot win outright, and trusting the GOPe to have his back in a second round vote is a fool's errand.
His best play now is to get out well-played, and support Trump to thwart the GOPe.
