Former Cruz for President National Co-Chair Opens Door to Trump Endorsement
Charisma News' Chaisma Caucus ^ | June 23, 2016 | Bob Eschliman

During a brief appearance on FOX News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto," evangelical faith leaders Bob Vander Plaats discussed his take on Donald Trump's recent "conversation" with more than 900 faith leaders this week in New York City.

And while he said the Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting still had some ways to come to secure the support of concerned evangelicals like himself, he didn't entirely slam the door shut on a future endorsement. Guest host Charles Payne, who was filling in while Cavuto recovers from open-heart surgery, asked specifically about that door being left open.

"I think one of the big steps, Charles, is who is he going to surround himself with? At the end of the day, personnel is policy," Vander Plaats said. "What I said many times on many shows is that one of the key indicators is going to be is who does he put forth as his vice presidential pick? Who are some of the Cabinet members going to be?"

He said his organization applauded some of the people Trump put on his initial "short list" of 11 potential Supreme Court nominees. That Trump has relied upon Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation to help with his selection criteria was also "encouraging," he added.

Payne then asked Vander Plaats about some comments that have been published in other Christian media, denouncing some of the things Trump said about praying for politicians during the event on Tuesday. Vander Plaats, noted those comments hadn't come from his organization, or from other faith leaders in attendance.

"We need to praying for everyone," he said. "As a matter of fact, that's where cultural transformation happens. We pray for Donald Trump; we also pray for Hillary Clinton. We also pray for Barack Obama."

I smell a rat...

Anyone aligned with Cruz, esp. at the height of the buzz of convention chaos, is not to be trusted.

Did this guy, or ANYONE, vet Obama on anything? I’m fed up with these strutting self-righteous assholes acting like they sit on the right hand of God.

It’s good to court support, but I look at it more simply. They know the candidates and THEY have to decide what to do. Just like the rest of us.

I wish I could go on tv and go on about how the candidate has to kiss my butt personally and still may not get my vote - but I wouldn’t.

I’d just support Trump.

Who he surrounds himself with???? How many abortions, illegals, muslims, does Hillary support having in this country? As many as possible. I mean it’s ridiculous that any evangelical should remain undecided..

Please keep an open mind. I was a Cruzer — although I was never rabidly anti-Trump — until Ted Cruz dropped out. Since then, I've been enthusiastically pro-Trump. In fact, I just made a big donation last night. Let's welcome with open arms converts to the Trump cause. We need all the voted we can get, and we need to isolate the true quislings, such as William Kristol.

After Trump secures the nomination at the convention (and he will), people will have to declare themselves to be in one of two camps:

1) For Trump (which includes the stop Hillary people)

2) For Hillary (which will include the stop/never Trump people)

That’s it folks, because that’s the way our system works. We have a two party system, and one of these two people will be the next president: Hillary or Trump.

It’s the type of choice we had in the past: Obama or Romney, Obama or McCain. Far from ideal, we sucked it up and got behind the Republican nominee, because the alternative (Obama) was too awful.

Cruz certainly understands that it’s one thing to not be enthusiastic about supporting Trump, but it’s another matter entirely to be seen as not being enthusiastic about STOPPING Hillary.

Although the candidate is not precluded from announcing who they would appoint to the cabinet prior to the general election, none (that I’m aware of) have done so since Thomas Dewey in 1948. He didn’t win.

So saying you’re holding out to see who Trump will name to his cabinet is a bit disingenuous.

I’m tired of these guys who think they’re better than the rest of us. We all sat through the primary season. We all got the same information. But these special snowflakes deserve MORE information before they’ll deign to consider maybe, possibly thinking about voting for Trump. If Hillary Clinton isn’t enough, just shut up and sit down.

Hey there, Bob, I hope that you have your thinking cap on. I’m going to lay things out for you in a short and simple way. See if you can follow:

1. No one has EVER been elected President in this country unless they were the nominee of one of the two biggest parties in existence at the time.

2. Hillary Clinton is going to be the nominee for the Democrats, and Donald Trump is going to be the nominee for the Republicans.

3. At this point in time, the Democrats and the Republicans are the two largest parties in the country.

4. Thus, either Clinton or Trump will be the next President - based not only on 227 years of history since the first Presidential election, but also because no one else is running that has even minimal name recognition, let alone a respectable amount of popularity.

5. Donald Trump is not perfect (just like the rest of us). Politically, he and you (and most other evangelicals) don’t agree with him all of the time. However, he does state that he will appoint Justices to the Supreme Court who have a record of interpreting the Constitution from an Originalist point of view, and that he opposes abortion, favors gun rights, favors policies like expanding fracking that will lead to energy independence, favors lower taxes and regulations, wants to control illegal immigration and wants to reduce and later eliminate the budget deficit.

6. Hillary Clinton has the opposite point of view on all of the issues mentioned in #5.

7. Your choice is to do one of two things: support Donald Trump and deal with him not being 100% in agreement with you on every issue, or stay at home and deal with Hillary Clinton, who assuredly disagrees with you on EVERY issue.

Bonus: many evangelicals stayed home in 2012 because they didn’t like Romney (because he is a Mormon, as if that is in any way relevant to running the country). So, they stayed home and got Obama’s 2nd term. How’s that working out for them (and us)?

My suggestion is to not only vote for Trump, but to get as many others to do the same as possible...because the choice isn’t between Heaven and Hell, it is between Earth and Hell.

It’s really very simple.

Do you want to keep your country?

Trump will help you do that.

Hillary will give it away to fraudulently documented foreigners.

You won’t need to worry about voting anymore if Hillary wins.
