Cokie Roberts and the Washington Post's Robert Costa talk politics ahead of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.
Transcript.
DAVID GREENE, HOST:
And I'm David Greene in Philadelphia. And I'm with NPR national political correspondent Don Gonyea. And Don and I and many others from NPR are going to be covering the Democratic National Convention, which begins tonight, Don. But, I mean, there's already been news coming out all weekend. The activity has begun.
DON GONYEA, BYLINE: Remember those sleepy summer weekends of your No more.
GREENE: (Laughter). That's right.
GONYEA: So on Friday, Hillary Clinton chose her running mate, Senator Tim Kaine from Virginia, of course. Then we had a blowup over leaked emails....
GREENE: Cokie, how big a deal is this - these emails? I mean, it seems like it is angering a lot of people who feel very strongly about Bernie Sanders.ROBERTS: It's a big deal at the moment, but it's not a long-term big deal, just like Melania Trump's speech was not a long-term big deal.
They keep talking about Hillary helping women and children. Someone needs to post pics of those Haitian women and children sleeping on the ground while Bill and Hillary used their relief funds to build a textile factory for their buddies.
HUGE QUESTION:
Bernie Sanders is NOT a Democrat. Yet, he is the one who moved - assumably under Roberts Rules of Order - to declare Hillary the nominee.
I know legalities mean nothing to Democrats, but wouldn’t it be true that LEGALLY he did not have the authority to make such a move in the convention, the move itself is thus not legal, and not binding, and that technically and legally Hillary is NOT the nominee of the Democratic Party.........????????
Remember those sleepy summer weekends of your No more.

What?
My late father was somewhat of an expert on Roberts
Rules of Order having taught and coached parliamentary
procedure teams with the FFA organization (formerly
Future Farmers of America), having judged such contests,
and having served as parliamentarian for his WWII
paratrooper associations as well as other organizations to
which he belonged. He had some cred along those lines.
My sense is that Bernie was a certified delegate and,
further, Roberts Rules is the law only so far as the
organization and its’ bylaws recognize it. If a
“point of order” is not called by a certified delegate
then it is what it is. The bottom line is that the
membership body has the authority to over rule Roberts
Rules.
Sorry for the tortured explanation but it is kind of
fun to speculate.
man, if Trump wins I sure do hope he quits public funding of NPR.
This propaganda tool of the dem party is little more than crappola.
I was aware that any organization can, at any time, elect to deviate from RRoO - but did not mention that.
Was wondering if they did that formally.
How did Bernie become a certified delegate - when he was instead one of the candidates? Was Hillary a delegate too? Seems doubtful to me....
Not a big deal I realize.....
What we don’t know is what rules govern who can do what.
For all we know they could wheel old Jimma out to the
floor for that purpose.
