The purpose of an "October surprise" is to deliver it when it's too late to respond.
Getting late, you say? You should brush up on your political history. Ever hear about this, four days before the vote? Or this, just days before the vote?
A lot of people dont remember how late that one in 2000 was.
FWIW, the historic comparisons for the late surprises don’t hold. So many votes are done early that it mutes the effect of a late revelation.
