The Hu-Wen team has boosted so-called "inner-party democracy" by indicating the supreme Politburo should submit itself to the scrutiny and supervision of the 356-member Central Committee.

The party plenum also endorsed suggestions to revise the state constitution by including clauses aimed at protecting private property.

I used to enjoy reading Willy's articles, as in the past he's made some interesting points. But lately he seems more and more like some poseur that just wants to show off his contacts and sources within the Chinese gov't.

This article is particulary bad, mainly because he doesn't mention the 500-pound gorilla in the room--what the Chinese people themselves actually want. All of his sugesstions are polishing the brass on a sinking ship.

Except this isn't really about reform. 'Intra-party democracy' is a ploy by the Hu-Wen clique to pry power away from the Shanghai faction. Once they have that power, do you think they'll want anyone else to have a say?

I've felt the same way at various times...but he is interesting at times too.

As for the space launch the 500 pound gorilla has already started...Although there are people that are elated about China's space mission, there are others that are not.

The CCP or PLA won't release the budget for the program for a reason. Primarily because a whole bunch of peasants think it was a waste of money. They can't eat patriotic gestures and think the CCP/PLA could have spent the billion plus US dollars on something far better that would help them far more...
