Polar bear kills last villager

A polar bear has killed the last villager on Russia's Vrangel island off the northern Chukotka peninsula, scientists at a local reserve said today.
The reserve's workers attempted to save Vasilina Alpaun, who was attacked on her own doorstep, but were too late.
The Ushakovskoye village had been abandoned since 1997, when its inhabitants were moved to the peninsula to make way for the bear reserve, but Alpaun, 25, returned to her old home shortly afterwards.
Bears roam free on the island and are rarely aggressive, the reserve's director Leonid Bove said, adding that the woman most likely provoked the animal.

Never provoke a polar bear.Being in the presence of a bear can be provocation enough, those critters are unpredictable and highly dangerous. Never go around them without bear medicine.

I think they're quite territorial, too.
True story: My parents, about 20 years ago, took a trip through northern Canada and landed, in a small plane, on ice somewhere. The pilot spotted a polar bear about a mile distant while they were looking around, and immediately told my parents to get back in the plane, they were taking off ASAP. They told me that the bear almost got the plane! It ran up to it and chased it as it was taking off and tried to grab it, just as they got off the ground...

I'm not at all surprised. Bears are pretty high on the food chain, and don't have a lot of fear. It would have taken that bear less than two minutes to cover that mile. He may have just been curious, but you can't tell what a bear will do next, because they don't even know.
