They were going to play the Longhorns and he took the team out to watch a bull being "cut". Of course the PETA folks went nuts. (uh oh sorry to use the term "nuts") Anyway, it was a bull that was scheduled to be "cut". It was't done just for the football team. I don't remember if they won the game.
While at A&M he came up with the 12th man squad of walk ons for kick offs. For those of you who don't know years ago when they only had 11 players a player was hurt and a student came out of the stands to fill in for the injured player. Ever since the fans have been called the "12th man). Jackie carried it to the max and created a kick off team of student walk ons He was one great coach!
Thanks, Jackie. You deserve a wonderful retirement.

I'd forgotten about the thing with the bull. He repeated that at MSU, didn't he?

LOTS more than PETA went nuts when he did this at MSU. You don't have to be an animal rights nut or even a liberal goofball to have a problem with castrating an animal while a hundred guys hover over it and cheer. I had a BIG problem with it. Many others did, too. It just didn't seem to fit in at MSU, with the veterinary school right there on the other side of campus.
Oh, and he had the 12th-man kickoff coverage at MSU home games, too, for the first few years he was here in MS. I don't think anyone is likely to do that anymore, though. Times have changed. Put a group of students out there with most teams these days and that would be like an automatic score, methinks.
