The FFers don't always identify their loc when they call in, or they just give road names, which mean nothing to me.

You need to get your own Thomas Guide, so you can follow what's going on!

For the uninitiated, the Thomas Guide is the most popular local map in the Southern California area. They are books of street maps, very detailed. Some people give directions to their place simply by giving their map/coordinate values. I, for example, live at H4, map 535 (Los Angeles county).

Yep, that would be the Wilderness Adventure Pass. It's required for non-residents of wilderness areas in SoCal; the cost goes to pay for such important stuff as keeping the roads cleared, litter collection on the roadways, keeping snowplows running during the winter, etc. You can drive wilderness roads without it, but you aren't supposed to stop, park, and get out of your car for any length of time without it. It prohibits a lot of the litter that was cluttering picnic areas and stops the local teenagers from going up in the mountains to get smashed-drunk.

The Big Bear Emergency Operations Center (EOC), Mountain Mutual Aid met this evening for a briefing on the Old fire and the strategy for saving Big Bear. The federal government has allocated additional resources to Big Bear. There are around 2000 people arriving to battle this fire. The Number one priority if keep the fire out of the Big Bear Valley. They described the arrival of federal help as; The Cavalry has arrived! The plan of attack is to direct the advancing fire away from fuel sources and away from the Big Bear Valley. The plan also includes trigger points where they will remove all but fire fighting personal. It is at that trigger point when we will then shut down and evacuate the station and no longer update this web site. Tomorrow will be a long and difficult day for everyone involved and so the advice was for everyone to rest tonight and prepare for the fight of a lifetime tomorrow. We are going to follow the same advice. After 9:00 PM tonight we will not update the radio report or this web site, in addition we will not answer the telephone. We will begin the day very early to start doing updates. We will see you in the morning unless all hell breaks loose overnight. This is the latest information that we have as of 8:45 PM, 10/29/03. The smoke from the fire is overwhelming the mountain communities and has impaired reconnaissance efforts to determine the movement and speed of the fire. At this time the best estimates is that the fire is around 3 to 4 miles west of the Big Bear dam and 6 miles west of Fawnskin. There are three fronts on the fire approaching Big Bear. It is moving east from the north side of Butler peak, as well as north up bear creek toward the dam in addition from the Santa Ana Canyon. The winds have been heavy today gusting over 40 MPH. We can expect that to continue tonight through Thursday at 9:00 PM. The tempters are dropping and the humidity has been on the rise with a moist marine layer pushing into the Mountain Slopes. This should help contain the fire. In addition there is a chance of showers this weekend and the higher elevations could even see a light dusting of snow.

Gee- Wilderness in Northern Calif means that there can be no motorized or mechanized item of any kind in there. Hiking, Horses, only. No cars, trucks, or even mountain bikes. Wonder why there is a different kind of Wilderness down there?
