FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 6, 2003

YCT TO PROTEST SEN. EDWARD KENNEDY FRIDAY NOV. 7TH AT TEXAS A&M
Kennedy to receive ?George Bush Award for Excellence in Public Service?

College Station, TX- The Young Conservatives of Texas A&M today officially announced plans to protest an appearance by Sen. Edward Kennedy on the Texas A&M University campus on Friday, November 7th. The out-of-the-ordinary protest will begin at 1:00pm and continue through the evening in Rudder Plaza. The public is encouraged to join. YCT is selling t-shirts through its website commemorating Senator Kennedy?s visit to Texas A&M.

YCT-A&M Chairman Matthew Maddox stated, ?As conservatives, it is our duty to inform other students of Senator Kennedy?s shameful record of public disservice. He has conducted himself in a manner, both politically and personally, that the vast majority of Texans find highly objectionable. We would be remiss not to publicly take a stand and voice our displeasure with Senator Kennedy?s actions.?

YCT-A&M Executive Director Sarah Davis noted, ?YCT categorically disapproves of Ted Kennedy and his policies. Not only does he promote a socialist agenda, but he also is a supporter of heinous partial-birth abortions. He was instrumental in blocking the judicial nomination of Texan Priscilla Owen and has applied a religious litmus test to confirming judicial nominees. In recent weeks, Kennedy has sunk to a new low, calling President George W. Bush a liar and falsely accusing him of fraud and bribery of our allies in connection with the liberation of the Iraqi people.?

Davis continued, ?It is difficult to ignore the poor example that Kennedy, who was expelled from Harvard for cheating, has set for the very students before which he is to speak. Since that time, he has a record of reckless drinking habits and was behind the wheel in the 1969 drowning death of Mary Jo Kopechne.?

Maddox added, ?While YCT certainly respects former President H. W. Bush and his role in selecting the recipient of this award, we have too much respect for Texas A&M, the state of Texas, and the current President of the United States to not make it clear the Ted Kennedy does not represent Aggie Values.?

YCT State Chairman David Rushing observed, "The two previous recipients of this award are Mikhail Gorbachev and Helmut Kohl so Kennedy regrettably has the distinction of being the first American politician to receive this honor. While we understand the Bush Foundation's desire to be non-partisan, if they wanted a Democrat, they could have chosen Sen. Zell Miller or former Sen. Sam Nunn. If they had to have a liberal, they could have chosen someone with personal integrity like former President Jimmy Carter. The choice of Ted Kennedy as the first American to receive this honor simply cannot be justified under any objective standard."

In addition to the members of the YCT Texas A&M chapter, YCT chapters from around the state will be joining in the protest. Among the chapters that will be represented at the protest are Stephen F. Austin, Southern Methodist University, University of North Texas, University of Houston, and Baylor University.

YCT has chapters at Texas A&M University, West Texas A&M, Baylor University, the University of Texas, Texas Tech University, Southern Methodist University, and Hardin-Simmons University. For over two decades, YCT has advanced conservative values at Texas college campuses and beyond.

3) Tips for Joining YCT at Protest

l Check out this campus map to find your way to Rudder Plaza.

2 Arrive as early as possible.

3 We want to put our best foot forward. This means we must maintain proper decorum with passers by, not direct negative comments toward Bush, and respect the university officials/police. Hopefully, they will also respect our First Amendment rights.

4 Bring money for event t-shirts, or better yet, order them online at yct.tamu.edu so that we know in advance how many to have on hand in what size.

5 Bring posters/banners. These should be directed at Kennedy only. Signs should focus on Kennedy?s left-wing legislative policies including pro-partial-birth abortion, blocking highly qualified judicial nominees based on a religious litmus test, promoting socialism, calling Bush a ?liar,? accusing Bush of bribing our allies, and claiming the war was ?made up in Texas?. Signs can also mention Kennedy?s personal faults, such as driving Mary Jo into the river, being expelled from Harvard for cheating, and excessive drinking.

6 Bring flotation devices. This is a key to our passive street theater, reminding the public that Kennedy was never held to account for the drowning death of Mary Jo K. A life vest, a life preserver, water wings, or an inner tube with a horsey on the front are all suitable.

I was actually very upset that my university would be involved in honoring the likes of Ted Kennedy so I called the University about this a couple of weeks ago and was referred to the Bush Foundation, where I spoke to another fellow Aggie. He told me that GHWB had personally selected Teddy boy prior to TK's most ascerbic remarks about W, and that GHWB decided to go ahead with the award after the remarks. While I wouldn't have gone ahead and honored the schmuck, I feel I have to respect (but not agree with) GHWB's decision.

After last Saturday's performance in Norman (Oklahoma 73, Aggies 0), it seems to me that the protests should be redirected at the head football coach and the athletic director!

The score was 77-0, and if you want to lead the way, sports.tamu.edu has all the email addresses and phone numbers you can handle today.
