DEAN: DO AS I DO, NOT AS I SAY!

Flush With Cash, Dean Abandons Commitment To Public Financing

________________________________________________________

“‘Before he was so flush with cash, Howard Dean was an ardent and passionate supporter of the matching-fund system,’ said Jim Jordan, manager of Kerry’s campaign. ‘Now that his situation has changed, of course, so have his views on that system. More flip-flops, more politics of convenience, more politics as usual.’” (Mark Z. Barabak, “Dean Taking Poll On Funding Question,” Los Angeles Times, 11/5/03)

WAS SO COMMITTED TO PUBLIC FINANCING,
WARNED OTHER DEMS NOT TO BACK OUT

March ‘03: Let There Be No Doubt. “Howard Dean committed Friday to taking taxpayer dollars to finance his presidential campaign … Former Vermont Gov. Dean said he has already met the requirement.” (Sharon Theimer, “Dean To Take Public Financing For Presidential Campaign,” The Associated Press, 3/7/03)

March ‘03: Watch Yourself, Dean Tells Dems.He promised to make it an issue in the Democratic primaries if any of his rivals decide to skip public financing … ‘It will be a huge issue,’ Dean said. ‘I think most Democrats believe in campaign finance reform.’” (Sharon Theimer, “Dean To Take Public Financing For Presidential Campaign,” The Associated Press, 3/7/03)

June: ‘03: And If You Don’t Believe Me, Read My Letter.“As a candidate seeking to become eligible to receive Presidential primary matching funds, I certify and agree to the following provisions … [I] will not incur qualified campaign expenditures in connection with my campaign for nomination in excess of the expenditure limitations…” (FEC Website, www.fec.gov/finance/2004matching/dean_docs_001.pdf, Accessed 11/5/03)

BUT AS CAMPAIGN COFFERS FILLED, DEAN’S
COMMITMENT BEGAN TO DIMINISH

August ‘03: Dean Floats Trial Balloon? Howard Dean “backed away from his pledge to adhere to spending limits, saying some advisers want to explore opting out of the Watergate-era public financing system because of his sudden fund-raising success. Dean said he still intends to accept taxpayer money and spending restraints, and suggested he has discouraged his staff from considering alternatives right now. … ‘Could we change our mind? Sure,’ he said.” (Jodi Wilgoren, “Dean Considers A Plan To Forgo Public Financing,” The New York Times, 11/5/03)

November ‘03: Will Push Polling Provide “Political Cover?” One person close to the Dean campaign described the polling … as a way to provide political cover for abandoning the system.” (Jodi Wilgoren, “Dean Considers A Plan To Forgo Public Financing,” The New York Times, 11/5/03)

9/20/03)

WITH FRIENDS LIKE THESE, WHO NEEDS PUBLIC FINANCING?

Dems Are Uniting To Defeat Bush & Republicans. “[Peter] Lewis, 69, who owns $1.4 billion of Progressive’s shares, and financier George Soros pledged $10 million each to a new political organization, America Coming Together. The group’s aim: mobilize people to vote against the president by raising $75 million, which is more money than any political committee has assembled for a campaign, aside from the Democratic and Republican national organizations themselves.” (“Billionaires Pledge Millions To Oust President,” Miami Daily Business Review, 10/29/03)

Dean Thought Of Over 500 Million Reasons He Shouldn’t Take Public Financing. The RNC will have to “counter the $300 million to $500 million that liberal Democratic groups are expected to plow into anti-Bush ads - at least three times what the Democrats spent against Mr. Bush in 2000.” (Ralph Z. Hallow, “Size Of Bush War Chest Raises Questions,” The Washington Times, 10/22/03)

DEMS SHOULD HAVE SEEN IT COMING

2000: Then-Governor Dean Flip-Flopped On Public Financing. “Six years ago, then-Governor Howard Dean signed legislation that he said would ‘change the way campaigns are run’ in Vermont. The intent of the law was to provide candidates for governor who participated in a voluntary system with a maximum of $300,000 in public financing, and set a spending cap. Dean, who at that time could attract donations more readily than challengers for his job, said he signed the law ‘even though I knew it was going to be to my own disadvantage.’ But when it came time for Dean to run for reelection in 2000, he rejected public financing and busted the spending cap by 300 percent.” (Michael Kranish, “To Dean, Finance Law Is Familiar Dilemma,” The Boston Globe, 9/6/03)

Obvious from this RNC Research that Howard Dean does not intend to keep his word on public financing -- what else does he not intend to keep his word?

I heard this fool on FNC this morning. He repeatedly said that President Bush's contributions were all coming from Bush's special interests, corporations.

I keep hollering at the TV that no, you dummy, they're coming from people like ME!!!

My favorite song from that Batman movie. When the joker was going through the museum.

Prince Partyman lyrics
"Gentlemen, let's broaden our minds!
Lawrence..."

(oh, yeah)

All hail - the new king in town
Young and old, gather 'round (yeah)
Black and white, red and green (funky)
The funkiest man U've ever seen

Tell U what his name is
Partyman, partyman
Rock a party like nobody can
Rules and regulations - no place in his nation
Partyman, partyman

Party people - say it now: YEAH, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!
Somebody holler if U wanna party

"Ladies and gentlemen, no pictures, please!"

Get it up, oh yeah
Partyman, partyman
Get it up, get it up

"Ooh, I love purple"

I rock the party, I rock the house
I rock the whole world, north, east and south
In the west - 17 horns blowin'

Partyman, partyman
(Lose me now boy)
Get it up
All hail the new king in town

Ain't nothin' but a muffin
We gotta lotta butter 2 go
(Y'say aye, an' I like ya 'way, but don't come now)
And if it break when it bend
U better not put it in - uh

Giddy up
(Ride 'em boy)
Partyman, partyman
Partyman
Partyman, partyman

Young and old, gather 'round
Everybody hail the new king in town

Is this somehow different from what Arnold Schwartzenegger did? First he wasn't going to take money from special interests, then he back downed on that and started accepting donations from special interests, just not labor unions or Indian tribes.
