Let me get this straight. When Islam goes into an area and tries to displace Christianity, it is a bad thing. But the Christian's Great Commission to convert all nations to Christianity is somehow logically better?

I think it is the difference in tactics that is relevant. Islamists, when they are ascendant, typically take a "convert or die" approach. Christians, OTOH, take the "Accept Jesus or face your Maker on Judgment Day" approach. The latter is definitely the more benign one.
