Gore Condemns Bush For Politicizing War on Terrorism

Former Vice President Al Gore delivered a one-hour speech on Sunday criticizing President George W. Bush's handling of the war on terrorism and calling for a repeal of the Patriot Act.

Accusing the Bush administration of using the war on terrorism to advance themselves politically, Gore told the 3,000 in attendance at Constitution Hall in Washington that he believes Bush has not done anything to make the United States a safer place since the September 11 attacks.

Gore said the USA Patriot Act has actually caused many Americans to lose some of their rights and freedoms protected by the U.S. Constitution.

"I want to challenge the Bush administration's implicit assumption that we have to give up many of our traditional freedoms in order to be safe from terrorists," Gore stated. "It makes no more sense to launch an assault on our civil liberties as the best way to get at terrorists than it did to launch an invasion of Iraq as the best way to get at Usama bin Laden."

Gore expressed concern about what he perceives as civil liberties violations that have done nothing to make the United States more secure.

Additionally, he warned that there are other areas the Bush administration has ignored which pose an even greater threat to national security, including the lack of security at nuclear plants, unchecked airline freight and no plan to protect electric power grids from terrorists.

He contends the detention of immigrants after the September 11 attacks was "a cheap and cruel political stunt" by Attorney General John Ashcroft.

Gore added, "[The Bush administration] has taken us much further down the road toward an intrusive 'big brother' style of government -- toward the dangers prophesied by George Orwell in his book '1984' -- than anyone ever thought would be possible in the United States."

Turning his attention to the Patriot Act, Gore described it as "a terrible mistake."

As reported by Talon News on Friday, a bipartisan bill called the SAFE Act introduced in the U.S. Senate by Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) would amend the PATRIOT Act's invasive civil liberties provisions, including wiretaps, investigation into library records, citizen surveillance and multi-jurisdictional warrants.

The Patriot Act is scheduled for a renewal vote again by Congress in 2005.

Accusing Bush of purposefully lying to the American people about the reasons for going to war in Iraq, Gore insists that Bush has "recklessly put our country in grave and unnecessary danger" as a result.

"[T]he administration has fostered false impressions and misled the nation with superficial, emotional and manipulative presentations that are not worthy of American democracy," accused Gore, who lost to Bush in the 2000 general election for president.

Gore insists he is not running for president in 2004, but many in the crowd urged the Tennessee native to throw his hat in the ring. He waved them off and told them he is a "recovering politician" who cares about his country.

The speech was co-sponsored by liberal Internet-based political action committee MoveOn.org and leftist legal group American Constitution Society.

An open letter to the "Alpha Male",
Al,
What did you and Bill do when the WTC was first attacked?
What did you all do about the USS Cole, the Khobar Towers and the Two US Embassies in East Africa? You actually cut back and almost cast into oblivion the FBI,CIA and all foreign intelligence, yes that is what you all did.
Also Al.
I also would like to remind you that the Patriot Act was not on the books when you,Clinton and Janet Reno sicked the dogs on those in WACO and killed 85 American citizen on American soil.
Yes bring it on brother there are plenty of answers to your questions but they all point the finger at you and brother Bill.
I know who is reponsible for putting American citizens in grave and unnecessary dangerand the world should be reminded of it.

I saw most of the "robots" speech. If he'd given more speeches like that in 2000, he'd have been elected.

Every time he opens his mouth, it becomes more apparent how awful it would have been if he had been president in 2000.

Gore is sharply focusing in on broad generalities, preferring to blow snot rather than inumerate specific examples. As long as leftist can emote, facts are irrelevant.

"recovering politician"

Unfortunately for Al, you don't normally "recover" from a low IQ.
