Girl Dies From Complications From The Flu; Vaccinations Urged

Flu Cases On The Rise Statewide

POSTED: 6:59 p.m. CST November 25, 2003 UPDATED: 7:48 p.m. CST November 25, 2003

TULSA, Okla. -- A 13-year-old Tulsa County girl with asthma has died of complications from influenza, the state Health Department said Tuesday.

Public health officials are awaiting further tests on the girl, who died Sunday morning. But they said she died of "probable influenza-related complications."

Health officials said they are seeing a significant increase in the number of flu cases in the state, especially among children.

Flu cases have been found in children in Tulsa and Oklahoma City, as well as in southern parts of the state, department spokeswoman Leslea Bennett-Webb said.

Outbreaks among school children often herald the start of flu activity in a community, she said.

Officials are urging Oklahomans to get vaccinated.

Children at high risk include those with asthma or other heart and lung diseases, those who need regular medical care or were hospitalized for diabetes, chronic kidney disease or a weakened immune system, and those who are on long-term aspirin therapy.

Never gotten a flu shot. Haven't caught the flu in years.

The one time I caught the flu was when the Air Force MADE me get the flu shot. Otherwise, I take 5,000 mg of vitamin C and an odorless garlic pill, don't stress out,et. Worked for years.

Besides how many more people die from complications of vaccines anyway? I'm not against vaccines, but I'm attempting to use more critical thinking with news. I think reporting one girl's death as the impending flu outbreak is irresponsible esp. when they haven't finished invesigating.

I got my vaccine yesterday. My wife's doctor is in the Pennsylvania MD's group that monitors flu outbreaks. The cases are more severe and earlier than last years.
News reports say they picked the wrong strain, but it will lessen the severity of the flu if you do contract it.

Everyone has a God-given immune system to fight infection such as the flu. Anyone can die FROM COMPLICATIONS FROM ANYTHING; from complications from ANY disease or a minor surgery.

The flu vaccine is outrageously over promoted, and the only ones who really benefit is the pharmaceutical company who manufactures the vaccine. The vaccine, it was announced a short while ago on the news in my area, has now been found to NOT EVEN BE EFFECTIVE AGAINST THE STRAIN OF FLU THAT IS GOING AROUND THIS YEAR.

The vaccine itself contains mercury, which is a preservative in the multi-dose vial, and mercury has been proven to cause autism in children.

You couldn't pay me enough to get one of these shots.

Interesting summary of relative risks regarding flu vaccine.

The flu seemed like nothing more than a potential inconvenience to me until I saw 3 people all <45 years old all otherwise healthy end up in the ICU during one flu season. One died, the other two required stays of at least 6 weeks most of those on ventilators, with numerous operative procedures. I came away from that flu season with a lot more respect for the bug and have gotten my vaccine early on ever since.

I thought there was some question about the current vaccine even being effective against the flu that's going around. I don't get a flu shot, they recommend it for people over 50, under 2 or with other chronic conditions. But I notice if you call any doctor they urge you to come right in for the shot...good way to boost revenues.

Ditto on the flu shots. These shots really show the mindless "lemming" tendency of people.
