NEVER FORGET
A Holiday Greeting from 'WE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE and YOUNG' Co-Author JOSEPH GALLOWAY:
Friends:
As we head into the holidays it is time to think of the airplanes which land every night at Andrews AB outside Washington carrying 12 to 15 wounded soldiers from Afghanistan and Iraq bound for Walter Reed Army Hospital.
Many are evacuated straight out of the field with no possessions. They need some of the smaller things to make life a little easier.
A list of what is needed and where to send it is attached.
GOD Bless Them.
JOE GALLOWAY
-----------------------------------------------------
The American Red Cross at Walter Reed is looking for incidentals/comfort items for sick and wounded Armed Forces Personnel now recuperating at the hospital. When someone stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan or elsewhere is wounded or falls ill, they're immediately evacuated and eventually end up stateside. It takes weeks for their personnnel effects to catch up with them.
Things that the Red Cross is asking for are:
telephone cares of at least 30 minutes / rolling luggage (small), totes, carry-ons / individually wrapped snacks / magazines / notepads, pens / playing cards and games / sweat pants and shirts (all sizes) /
All items should be addressed to:
ATTN: Barbara Green / Walter Reed Army Medical Center / 6900 Georgia Ave, N.W. / Washington, DC 20307-5001 /
Checks should be made out to the American Red Cross.
For more information, call (202) 782-2080 or e-mail Barbara.Green.1@AMEDD.army.mil

According to the "Joe's Biography" Link on his Knight Ridder Columns Section on:
http://www.lzxray.com ...JOE GALLOWAY was awarded his Bronze Star with V on May 1, 1998 for his rescuing wounded soldiers at the Battle of the IA DRANG Valley in November 1965. He is the only Civilian to receive such an Award during the Vietnam War.
Thank you for asking.

How did he get a Bronze Star? Is there anyplace we can read about it? Try the book, by Galloway himself and Hal Moore, "We Were Soldiers Once, And Young". Then go rent the movie with Mel Gibson playing Hal Moore and Barry Pepper playing Joe Galloway. Then you'll begin to understand. To paraphrase Sgt.Maj.Plumley, played by Sam Elliot, "there were no noncombatants in that place". And to quote General Moore, "Hollywood finally got it right"
Not that the movie is 100% faithful to the book, it's not, but from those I've known who were there, they got the essence of pretty well down.

Can we send cards to Any Soldier at that same address? What's the best way to handle that?

Rent a copy of "We Were Soldiers" and you'll see Galloway reluctantly pick up an M-16 and defend the wounded at the 7th Cav's aid station and single-handedly carry a wounded soldier to a huey for medevac. Oh and grab a box of Kleenex, too. It's a tearjerker.

I asked them that and the young army doctor smiled real wide and said you're here, go asked them :-)
I asked Sgt. Santos and he said he was being treated very well and couldn't think of anything he needed, I looked around and all I could suggest is reading material

How did he get a Bronze Star?
By being the anti-Dan Rather.
And a lot more like Ernie Pyle.
(Other posters have given you the factual reasons for the award.)

I bet 'Gunner can expedite them. Darn right I could.. I can work it so's we can take advantage of
my LTL discount rate and get 60% off. I'ts no trouble at all as I get
daily pickup at the dock from several major carriers and package carriers, too.
I envision the cards shipping on a small wrapped pallet, though.
I'd be most pleased to ship 'em.

A few gift suggestions from a guy who was medivac'ed once:
1) Radio's
2) Small TV's ( I recommend small 50 dollar jobbies that can be seen at bedside, or battery powered ones- Sams sells a good version)
3) Warm hospital robes
4) House-shoes
5) Tape players, CD's, casettes
6) Lots of moral support and love
Hope this helps...I'm putting together a package today

I just e-mailed my daughter, and made a copy for myself. This looks like a good project for her as one of the requirements on her way to the Gold Award! I'll talk to her about it tonight.
Is she supposed to contact the Red Cross before asking for donations of things?
