Marriage is deeply rooted in the social order. When the social order breaks down, starting with the breakup of extended families, it's just a matter of time before we end up with a society consisting of very loosely affiliated individuals. The long term consequences are easy to discern. Those subcultures that continue along traditional pathways (e.g. muslims) will outpopulate the rest over time. This is nature's self-adjusting mechanism for insuring that families and children will continue

Excellent observation. We are all becoming much too cynical and materialistic and bitter and self-absorbed, and by 2100 the Americas will be all Hispanic and the rest of the world will be all Arabic.

In FreeRepublic most posters wallow in self-pity and bitterness and greed all our lives. And that represents the rightest of the right and the most religious of the religious. What does this speak of what America is becoming, now? Heartbreaking!

I give it 50 years till the USA is fragmented into a Spanish speaking enclave; several rural, predominantly white european enclaves; and the rest of the country, in which the impositon of sharia will be seriously considered owing to a combination of a complete moral breakdown and an islamic population that rises to the "tipping point".

Till today there has never been a society in which the family unit has taken such a beating -- even in the darkest most anarchical days of Europe following the fall of Rome, this did not happen.
