I think there is. Conservatives are some of the smartest people around. We just need time to come up with good ideas.

I'm of the "assimilate or die" camp.
Convince me there is a wiser option.

The thing is, a lot of potential solutions could be made politically palatable, if the administration really wanted to do so. We supposedly have a national security situation which demands greater attention to security measures, of which 10 million plus illegal aliens is a rather large breach. Using that angle, they could get just about any reasonable measure through Congress. But they don't want to.

Bear in mind my familiarity with the history of the Late Roman Empire, and the ruin wrought upon that culture by the adoption of defense in depth and laeti policies.
again, convince me this situation has a solution other than draconic.

Oh. And I let you dodge the bullet. Sorry, that isn't like me. The question was:
"and what if, just for the sake of argument, there is NO SUCH ANIMAL?" Meaning, what do you propose if there is no solution which is practical AND politically acceptable? What is more desirable: A solution that is practical, or a non-solution that is politically palatable?
