December 24, 2003 -- WASHINGTON - Alarming messages published on known al Qaeda Web sites are claiming the terror network is about to launch its biggest strikes ever - and are warning Muslims to leave the cities of New York, Washington and Los Angeles. The statements monitored by U.S. government agencies, as well as by a Washington-based terrorist research group, are part of the alarming increase in "chatter" among terrorist operatives in recent weeks that played a role in the Bush administration's decision to raise the nation's threat alert to high (orange).

Detroit? How could you tell the difference? You'd need detailed forensic examination of the city before and after a nuclear strike to make sure one had occurred. I guess the higher radiation readings would tell, but as far as the general look of the place it would be about the same. If fact it might, arguably, improve it by taking out the miles of abandoned, slum and abandonded slum buildings.

An al Qaeda spokesman identified as Abu Issam al-Yamani [was quoted] as saying,"The next al Qaeda attacks will be most violent and will target the U.S." and urged Muslims "to leave the country if they don't wish to die as a result of a Jihadist operation."

You know, it's funny you mention that. Bin Laden's goal has been to start a war between Islam and the West. He thinks that if they're pushed past a certain point, the entire Muslim world will rise up and confront us.

Notice that his targets are not only big cities, but recently even talking about small towns with low populations. He's trying to hit us as hard as he can, not to kill us, but to provoke us. If he can turn even the liberal centers of power against him, and spread fear that anyone in any little town in America is in danger, he can more effectively build that sense of terror that will make us respond.

Beyond that, I think he's an idiot. His entire premise for this is that at some point the Muslims will rise up, which is laughable, but he is a fanatic. Fanatics can be deadly opponents, even if their strategic vision is inherently flawed.

A terror attack in a rural area "might" harm a few people, but the rest are more resilient, more able to cope, and MORE able (and willing) to attack back immediately and effectively. The news media ignores them - unless they attack the news media's neighborhood: witness how LITTLE the plane crash in rural PA was covered, compared to the ctiy attack in Manhatten.

Sure, there is't the "military" SWAT teams in a bus nearby wearing black armor and caps

But there are hundreds of nearby deer hunters, turkey hunters, homeowners, sheriffs, and property owners. All within a few miles.
