Seriously? They have gun rights? I remember the Brits were trying to gobble up guns in the city they controlled. I hope you are right. Gun rights are best for the long term. FReegards....

Well, I should say last I knew, from a few months ago, this was a Coalition Provisional Authority ruling. I forget if it was one AK-47 per adult or one per family, but the idea was that they were necessary for people to protect themselves. You'll remember that AKs were being fired in the streets of Baghdad to celebrate the capture of Saddam. So far I haven't heard of any attempts to seize them. Of course explosives and RPGs are forbidden.

One 7.62mm (or lesser calibre) rifle per household. (AK-47s, fully automatic, are OK) 12.7/14.5 mm machine guns are a no-no.

I don't know what all the rules are, but I've seen groups of armed men in civilian attire making what looks like impromptu check points on the highway (Tribute Money?). AK's and machine guns. In the open.
