Kentucky U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, already No. 2 in GOP leadership as Senate whip, apparently has his eye on the top leadership post.
McConnell, a Louisville Republican, was featured in a New York Times article last weekend. The article speculated that with Senate President Bill Frist, R-Tenn., not expected to seek re-election to leadership in 2006 McConnell is likely to succeed him.
University of Virginia political science professor Larry Sabato, an expert on Congress, agreed.
McConnell "is next in line, no question about it," Sabato said. "There is a lot of speculation that Frist will not only step down as Senate president in '06, but also resign from the Senate to run for president." McConnell wasn't available for comment.
THEY SAID IT: "The issue is never over." McConnell in the New York Times on the potential that opposition to campaign finance reform will re-emerge even though the U.S. Supreme Court recently struck down challenges to the laws.

Hugh & Series, Critical & Pulled by JimRob
Special to FreeRepublic | 17 December 2003 | John Armor (Congressman Billybob)
This is nothing like the usual whine by someone whose post was pulled. JimRob pulled my previous thread for a good reason. "If direct fund-raising were permitted on FR, it would soon be wall-to-wall fund-raising."
So, let's start again correctly. This is about civil disobedience to support the First Amendment and challenge the TERRIBLE CFR decision of the Supreme Court to uphold a terrible law passed by Congress and signed by President Bush.
All who are interested in an in-your-face challenge to the 30- and 60-day ad ban in the Campaign Finance "Reform" Act, please join in. The pattern is this: I'm looking for at least 1,000 people to help the effort. I will run the ad, and risk fines or jail time to make it work -- AND get national support.
But there should be NO mentions of money in this thread, and not in Freepmail either. This is JimRob's electronic home, and we should all abide his concerns.
Put your comments here. Click on the link above, and send me your e-mail addresses. I will get back to you by regular e-mail with the practical details.
This CAN be done. This SHOULD be done. But it MUST be done in accord with JimRob's guidelines.
Fair enough?

Do we have to wait until 2006?

One can only that this is true...first the eunuch Lott, then the eunuch Frist...finally, we might get someone who has principles, a spine and can articulate his position. Pray further that Santorum takes the No. 2 spot.
Finally, if Bush would remember that Congress shall not spend monies for which it does not have specific authority and vetoes Congress's spending outrages, we may yet advance this country.

Remember this IS an election year, that means the lads/lasses from congress are going to be looking for your vote and support. It's grillin time.

I heard, also, that Frist might make the big jump, but I seriously doubt it. Otoh, if he does aspire to be Prez, quitting SML is a terrible route...too much compromising that comes back to bite him, soooo maybe...???
I wonder if McConnell could have floated the Frist/Prez. rumour to weaken him and muscle him aside.

Damn right.
It will in indeed take a very "hardcase" to get the damn Senate to act properly. I like Frist but his style ain't working.

True, But if he can do something about CFR, then he's my guy.
We have to remember that we're dealing with a politican here and if you get someone who you agree with 60% of the time, then that's about as good as it gets.

I've long admired McConnell's determination to fight "CFR". He held firm, when others caved or sought accommodation.

..believe me I understand. CFR stinks to high heaven.. I've voted for McConnell every time he's up for election. Done some campaigning for him.. I've been calling, faxing, sending letters to him on the immigration issue.
