Dog killed by bear this A.M. January First at about 9:00 A.M

This morning my wife let the three dogs outside to do their thing. Little did she know that on our front porch were two bears.

The dogs immediately knew the bears were their and ran out into the yard. THe two bears chased after the dogs. My wife screamed and I ran into the living room. At that time the little dog was running for the front door. One of the bears charged after the dog. The poor little thing did not make it my wife had to slam the front door shut and watch through the window as the bear mauled the dog. If she did not shut the door that bear would have been in the house.

The bears then continued after the other two dogs which were able to out run the bears and I finally managed to scream at the bears to wear they stopped long enough to get the other two dogs back in the house.

I called 911, who of course said to call fish and wild life.

Fish and Wild life (just in case a bear is at your front door on a holiday) does not answer.

I called Collier County sheriffs office, who gave me a female officer,(wish I got her name) who basiccaly told me the bears were their first put up a fence.

1. wherever she lives apparently does not realize the bears were there first.

2. a 4 to 5 foot fence is not going to keep a tree climbing bear from going over it.

After calling 3 times an officer came out who at least was a little sympathetic, and saw the dead dog and took a report.

If one of my sons or me or my wife walked out the door at that time it could possibly have been one of us. We have had bears around over the years , but they have never been this aggresive, and not fearfull of humans.

The moral of the story is, that one of us will have to die before any local agencies do anything.

I'd be petrified with sorrow watching my pet being mauled to death. I'm sorry that happened.

Maybe it's time to get a gun and shoot the next bear that threatens you.

If I know anything about bears, they'll be back. If you don't have a big gun, better get one.

When the bears come back and you shoot them, be sure to drag them into the house before calling the police.

I'm sorry your New Year got off to such a crummy start.

A tough experience, but one that could have been much worse, without your wife's quick thinking.

I only have to worry about deer eating my landscaping here in central coastal NJ.
