My wish for 2004 is that Americans take back their country.
For that to happen, we've got to look deeper - much deeper - than the war in Iraq. If we can believe the polls, all too many of us are mesmerized by this war that was started, first of all, under false pretenses and now threatens to consume our energy and our money for a long time to come.
Meanwhile, we've unleashed a new hate America campaign around the world that has increased, not lessened, the terror threat we all now face.
But that's water over the dam.
What we can't allow to happen, though, is to let that war on the other side of the world mask what is happening to us right here at home. The right wing in this country has cleverly taken control of our federal government and, while our attention continues to be diverted by Iraq, is using its new-found power to make profound changes in the land.
Environmental controls are being loosened. The gap between the rich and poor has been widened. Our children and their children are being saddled with unconscionable debt. A woman's right to control her own body is being threatened. Corporate power has been strengthened while the plight of the American working men and women has been worsened as those corporations move their jobs overseas.
The road to privatizing Medicare has been started. Social Security is next. Our children are spending their school time taking math and reading tests while the lessons of life, music and art are dismissed.
And all that will pale next to what will happen if these same forces are given four more years to also take control of America's judiciary, the one branch of government that still exhibits some balance.
Therefore, nothing is more important than in 2004 the people rise up and take back control of the government that was established for them, not the rich and powerful.
