WASHINGTON - Conservatives wait warily as President Bush makes final decisions about his election-year budget, three years into an administration on whose watch spending has mushroomed by 23.7 percent, the fastest pace in a decade.

While Bush has emphasized repeatedly the need to rein in spending, overall federal expenditures have grown to an estimated $2.31 trillion for the budget year that started Oct. 1.

Further infuriating conservatives, Bush and the Republican-run Congress have enacted a $400 billion, 10-year enlargement of Medicare; $87 billion in expanded benefits for farmers; and $40 billion for increased veterans' payments and the Air Force's leasing and buying of refueling tankers.

Congress writes, Bush signs.

I've emailed my RINOs, if everyone else would, Bush wouldn't have anything to sign.

And they're still raiding the Social Security surpluss revenue every year, with no serious reform in sight.

I FEEL YOUR PAIN. It just amazes me how badly this thing of ours could get. I feel like we are in the final days of Americas' greatness. All three branches of our government, together, are destryoying our country.

The Pres does not write the budget, Congress does.

New Amendment: Congress shall make no budget which expends more money than what they find in their couch cushions... who's with me??

Congress shall make no law..... the founders should have stopped right there.

Some Republicans are wary of the Illegal Alien issue.

Did you have to post that?

Now I'll have to post one of my pics in reply, and that will really push the ArbustoBustezas' buttons.

So, Social Security and other entitlements are 2/3 of the budget and they whine over the 1/3 that can actually be changed by anyone?

I'm sure that there are areas where spending should be controlled. There always is with government.

However, since Clinton cut the Defense Budget so severely, Bush had to replenish that budget. Also, being at war plays a major role in this budget as well. I could be wrong but it seems like common sense.

You are right, we should support out of control spending wherever possible. Especially if someone has an (R) after their name. If they do the exact same thing, but have a (D) after their name, we should attack them visciously and accuse them of being communist and socialists.

I knew it, somehow it was inevitable that it was Clintons fault that the DISCRETIONARY spending has gone up over 30% under Bush and the republican congress. Lets keep making excuse for an out-of-control republican president and congress that is spending this country into bankruptcy.

When they get put out of the majority, they can once again run on a "elect us and we will be fiscally conservative" platform...and people are just dumb enough to believe it.

The presidential candidate who gets up and says he'll get a flat tax system pushed through congress will win the election. Wanna bet that nobody will say it?

Clinton cut the Defense Budget so severely,

No one (on the conservative side) has said anything about defense issues.

The Socialized Medications are the killer, IMHO. 17K an average 40 year old will before retirement is one estimate I heard.

But the worst part is, everyone else is going to want free pills now too, then complete medical care.

Bush has opened the barn door for full Socialized Medicine, and I doubt it can be stopped now.

I didn't mean to imply that Conservatives complained about the defense budget at all. I just meant it contributes to the percentage the budget will go up.

I agree, I’m concerned also with the medicare situation. However, I don't pretend to know the entire bill and until I research it thoroughly, I can't make a complete assessment. It was only a matter of time that something was done with medicare and drugs. I just wonder if it's better for a republican to have done something rather than have the liberals have their hand at it. Again, I have to read more on the topic.
