SACRAMENTO — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger plans to propose a 10% fee increase for Californians attending college at the University of California and California State University and a fee hike of up to 40% for graduate students at the universities, sources familiar with the governor's budget said Wednesday.

At the same time, the budget is expected to contain reductions in college financial aid for students from moderate-income families.

Diana Fuentes-Michel, executive director of the California Student Aid Commission, said she expects the governor's proposal to tighten qualifications for Cal Grants, the state's main financial aid program.

It's cool. He never said he wouldn't raise fees, only taxes.

(/off sarcasm)

ACK! I can't take the bias any longer. I'm going to implode... 1....2....3.... >Sigh<

Of course the opening lines DON'T mention the fact that Arnold has had nothing to do with college tuition increases of upwards of 40% in the last several years.

He wants to LIMIT astronomical increases to around 10% per annum-- go read his State of the State Address to CA.

Sounds perfectly fair to me.
You use it, you PAY FOR IT.

If the fees are too high, go somewhere else. Then the fees will come down with drops in enrollment. Maybe the universities will even cut costs, like perks for tenured professors and support for feel-good groups like the Gay-Lesbian-Bi-Transgendered Quilting Club.

Yup, something along the lines of, "Waaaaaaaaaaah, make the OTHER people sacrifice to balance the budget, I want mine, waaaaaaaaaaahhh."

But I thought Dean said there was no tax break for middle class because fees have increased. Basically he is saying fees are taxes. :-)

Illegal aliens pay in-state (subsidized) tuition rates, too! How wonderful!

It seems that only liberals can afford a college education so raise the tuiton as high as possible.Liberals get into college to hide from real life and i've seen them at 50 and 60 years old as they hang around there like pedophiles at a school yard.

Most of the students I have talked with would prefer that the UC system simply limit enrollment, throught academic standards, rather than emphasize increases in fees.

From their perspective up to 30% of UC entrants and 50% of Cal State entrants have no business in the respective systems. Usually these academically unprepared entrants are also Cal Grant recipients.

If these Cal Grant funds were instead used to underwrite the institutions there would be necessity for only a small fee increases.

Those being hurt the most are the private pays. Their fees are raising one for one while the welfare crowd received substantial reimbursement for the increased fees during the present academic year in the UC system.

It wasn't Schwarzenegger's fault. The liberal legislature wrote the bill giving illegal aliens subsidized tuition, and Davis happily signed it. For UC's, the Regents also approved it.

While it would be difficult to get the legislature to reverse itself, it would make sense that one of the cuts to the state colleges should be to remove the subsidy to illegal aliens. Illegal aliens should pay the same unsubsidized rates as foreign students and out-of-state Americans who haven't been paying CA taxes. Children of the military who live in CA without CA residence ought to have received the subsidies before illegal aliens did.

Wouldn't it make more sense to leave the college fees where they are and simply charge all illegals going to California college the out-of-state tuition rate? (Currently, they get the in-state tuition rate.)

Seems that would solve the problem right there...and without punishing Americans who seek to improve their lot in life.

up to 30% of UC entrants and 50% of Cal State entrants have no business in the respective systems.

Yes, unfortunately many UC and CSU students are unprepared for the basic classes. It's expensive to enroll them in remedial classes at UC or CSU rates, when they should have learned the material in high school.

Usually these academically unprepared entrants are also Cal Grant recipients.

If that's true, then I hope Gov. Schwarzenegger can force the UC's and CSU's to raise their minimum standards for admission.

I agree, but I doubt it would happen, given the recent proposal to grant another amnesty. As a start, CA should stop subsidizing illegal aliens beyond the minimum required by the feds.
