and support for feel-good groups like the Gay-Lesbian-Bi-Transgendered Quilting Club.

That's what's meant by "fees". Student fees pay for that stuff as well as the bus system and things like recreation services.

Now, most undergraduates just view this as a tuition increase, but graduate students aren't supposed to pay tuition, but they do pay fees. I was furious at having to pay fees as a graduate student -- while I was supposed to be represented by a union!

Instead of the percentages, can someone please tell us, in real dollars, just what this really means?

Yeah, 40% sounds like a lot, but if one credit hour costs $100.00 for in state tuition, is $140.00 really that large of an increase?

Wouldn't it make more sense to leave the college fees where they are and simply charge all illegals going to California college the out-of-state tuition rate? (Currently, they get the in-state tuition rate.)

Actually would have little effect on the system. But if you look at the effects from the consequences of illegal immigration then things take a dramatic turn. If you look at the number of anchor babies and their children who attend the three public, post secondary, educational systems in California, then the subsidies are staggering.

If all three of these generations were charged out of state fees and lost their eligibility for Cal Grants there would be a dramatic difference in the tax payer's burden.

Who knew that when the courts started tinkering with the original intent of the 14th Amendment in the latter half of the 19th century what a pickle we'd be in today.

??? Interesting. I'm quite sure that I heard the governor stating that he wanted to put a fee cap on the UC system during his state of the state speech.

Could this be rumor mongering or poor journalism on the part of the LA Times??? . . . . *Gasp!*

Davis raised the tuition over 35% at both the CSU and UC last year and 80% at the Community Colleges. There was whining, but nothing like you'll hear because of Arnold's much smaller hike.

Tighten your belts. He promised to make the tough calls that no one else was willing to make, and he is following through. Every interest group in the state, and many from outside will be crying long and hard by the time he's through. In the end, he can get it done with a little help.

By what right does the state government control education? In particular, where does state control find the right of it's authority in the ownership of the entire educational establishment?

>> It's cool. He never said he wouldn't raise fees, only taxes.
(/off sarcasm)

It's perfectly okay if tax-paying U.S. citizens are working two jobs to attend college and STILl can't afford it (as was MY case when attending a four-year private institution, leaving me thousands in debt)

The more IMPORTANT issue, according to RINOs and RATs in government, is making sure ILLEGAL ALIENS exercise their "right" to attend college here!
