There were the smooth, soulful sounds of Percy Sledge.

There were women draped in silk shawls, bejeweled gowns and fur coats, with their hair pulled back in European twists.

There were men in black tuxedos, guiding their wives to the dance floor.

snip from another online article...

JACKSON, Miss. -- Mississippi's 2004 legislative session will begin Tuesday at noon.
After elected officials are sworn in, one of the first items on the agenda will be the year's budget.
Gov.-elect Haley Barbour said the state faces a $700 million deficit.

Very poor move from a member of the so called 'fiscally conservative part'

A few hours into the event, Barbour took Marsha's hand and the two danced cheek-to-cheek to When a Man Loves a Woman.

How beautiful and heart warming. Perfect song for MS's first couple. So true and so romantic. May God bless them both.

Haley Barbour has been in office for one day. If any governor is to be blamed for the budget deficit its outgoing Democratic Governor Ronnie Musgrove.

With a little blue mood lighting and decadent spreads of smoked amberjack, seared tuna and oysters on the half-shell, the crowd mingled and slow-danced.

Mrs. Goodman, are you trying to seduce me?

"I've seen some fine-looking ladies here," he said.

Dude, you're at a cocktail party in Mississippi. What did you expect? Not to mention, Sela Ward was present!

Hope Ladner, 30, a legal assistant in Jackson, used the occasion to wear a gown her father bought for her, complete with a black bodice, a white chiffon drape, and a black, silver and white beaded neck accessory.

I went to high school with her. She's definitely one of the "fine-looking ladies" mentioned above.
