Well, from what I've read, his injuries were pretty minor (one of them was a scrape on his cheek, if I recall correctly).

As far as 3 in 4 months (if that is what it was), I guess he just had a string of (potentially) very bad luck.

I think it had to do with his position. Our Navy gunboats on the Mekong river were basically fat targets going up and down through the jungle. Yes, they could return some powerful firepower in reply, but basically I think they waited to be shot at before engagin the enemy (whom they otherwise could not see in the jungle.

It was not a particularly safe mission. Having said that, his being wounded 3 times was a factor of his boat being a floating target, rather than any great heroism on his part (someone correct me if I'm wrong as I do not mean to slight ANY Viet Nam vet, regardless of his party affiliation or treasonous behavior AFTER he got out.)
