the election is decided by a small group of "independent" people in the middle. So you have to divide the electorate into segments. Make your case that the Democratic base, from what is known of them, are intelligent people? The "elites" you refer to are Dems for the most part, they consider themselves the "intelligensia" and chuckle that they have fooled so many and brought them to their side.
so the election comes down to is how many of the independents you can educate about what is going on. Alot of them listen to Rather/Brokaw/Jennings every night and that is their reality. And its being reflected in these polls, with nothing to counter it.
