Russian Population Falling At Rate Of 900,000 Per Year
MOSCOW - The Russian population is currently declining at a rate of more than 900,000 persons a year, according to Valery Elizarov, head of Moscow State University Economics Department's Center for the Study of Population. Elizarov spoke at a meeting of the Rosbalt-sponsored political club, 'Russia: Vector of Development 2004-2008,' with support from the Projects Institute and the National Information Group. Elizarov heads the center's population economics and demographics laboratory.
The Russian population has been dropping since 1992, when mortalities for the first time outpaced births, he said. This year's expected 1.5 million births will have their counterpart in approximately 2.4 million deaths, he said. The shortfall can only be made up by an in-migration of labor, he said. However, that flow has been ebbing: if 50%-60% of the difference between births and deaths was covered in the early 1990s, that percentage is now no more than 5%, he said. Elizarov noted with special emphasis that one of the main reasons for the population decline is 'the especially high mortality of men of working age.' The average age of death for Russian men is now 59 years, which puts it at the level of undeveloped Bangladesh, he said.

You're quite correct about the abortions over there. In fact, abortion is the standard form of birth control in Russia, with women averaging 5 abortions in their lifetime. Abortion is not, and until this year had fallen by 75% from 1990. Since Oct 2003 after 12 weeks it is illegal and soon illegal all around.

All my friend and relatives have on average 2 some 3 children.

Thank you for stereo type...no Russian not much more drunk then Americans...I see how Americans drink, especially children of 18 or so. ==
Conservative you'll be amazed if you go to my home town in Sibiria. Russians definetely drink not less then americans. I never saw dozens of young peoples on the street with bottles of beer in hands in America as I saw on weekends in my home town.

Glad to know the trend is reversing. Still odd that the article doesn't mention the contribution that abortion-as-contraception has made to this problem.

Hay, I seen it at place like Panama City Beach, Fl where hundreds drunk out of minds. I seen it during street parties in some US city where hundreds drunk out of minds...especially, which I not quite understand, when US mark Mexican Independence Day....is this preperation for when most US is Mexican?
And Germans...Christ, during feasts...which start in March and go to October Feast...they happens in all village, town and city. Average Feast is week long and only purpose is sit and get drunk and drunker....then next week go to next village or town and do same.
I am not saying Russian drink little, to much even, but compared to some nation it is not so bad...ever see Finns drink near St. Petersburg? Biggest drunkens around, worse then any Russian...Swedes too.

This is the same as in Western Europe. They have become too lazy to breed. "La Dolce Vita" did it's job.

>>the Russian population had been steadily shrinking since the end of WWII,
>The Nazis made a serious start on that trend. Poor Russia.
Stalin, et al, made a pretty good start on it in the two decades before the Nazis showed up.

Couple facts, American native born population also shrink...Mexican and Chinese boost it...soon also Islamics. In Russian average per woman go from 1.2 to 1.7 from 1998 to 2002, this year should be 1.9 or even over 2.0 and still on increase. Abortion after 12 week also illegal...soon within year or two Russia in self replenishment mode...when Russian gets rich, russians have children.

RC...Thanks for you regular commentary. I always enjoy your posts and love to hear about post communist Russia. Its interesting to hear from someone who lived through a communist ruled hyper-socialist system. These socialist loving morons of the USA should listen to your commentary.
I've visited and talked to eastern Europeans who are basking in teh freedoms the last 15 years have bought to them.
BTW I've heard the youth in Iceland might drink more than the Fins.

Look, I am also a naturalized citizen. I have lived all over the world asdirector for my company. It is nice to see that you have a lot of patriotism for your country.
However, the problem in russia IS a declining population, as it is in Europe. Another problem is the atrocious work ethic in Russia, left over from the Communist years. This will change very slowly.
Our population in the US is expected to grow from it's present 300 million to 500 million in the net 50 years. Who cares where they come from?

I meant no insult by the "stereotype" -- this is only what I have read and heard many times. I am ready to be corrected by different facts, but most of the things one hears about Russia in this country are negative.

The Icelanders can certainly knock them back, but the odd thing is, ONLY on weekends---you have a beer with dinner during the week and they look at you like you're a weirdo, but on Fri & Sat night - whoa...

I remember reading that article. From what I remembered his wife learned Russian and was able to talk to the average Russian about their families. All of Europe is headed towards this type of decline. (If you don't count the immagration from Islamic countries)

Our population in the US is expected to grow from it's present 300 million to 500 million in the net 50 years. Who cares where they come from? I don't think the USA has to double it's population every generation --- our cities are too big now and farm land is shrinking --- but as far as immigration, we need to make sure that only immigrants who can pay their own way come here, by their own insurance --- which is far from the case we currently have.

Your analysis is correct. However I think the Chinese have already seen the problem and will take care of it in due time.

It is just natural progression. We grew in the last 30 years from 200 mill. to 300 mill.
We don't want to wind up like Western Europe, where the declining population has thrown countries like Germany into certain Bankruptcy. In 20 Years 65% of their population will be over 65 years of age. Who will pay for the promised Social benefits? It will also only accellerate the Brain drain.
As for Insurance, we have a problem since the healthy young people decline coverage because their beer budget would be impeded. However, that's another story, another seperate discussion.
To: americanbychoice
I just don't believe population growth alone ensures a great economy --- or Mexico's would be excellent and it's far from that with the majority of it's citizens living in utter poverty. Same is true of Islamic countries --- if their population growth is so good ---- then why are they all dirt poor horrendous places? It's the growth of the middle class in comparison to the other classes that is important. Russia's problems is it suffered economic collapse from Socialism, it's going to take a while for that to change.

Besides it is self selecting. Folks who don't want kids don't have kids; folks who do want kids have kids and pass that trait along.
The Democrats are finding this out the hard way: large parts of entire generations of potential Democrat voters have been aborted. Kids are coming out more conservative despite the best efforts of our government schools.
