Russian Population Falling At Rate Of 900,000 Per Year

MOSCOW - The Russian population is currently declining at a rate of more than 900,000 persons a year, according to Valery Elizarov, head of Moscow State University Economics Department's Center for the Study of Population. Elizarov spoke at a meeting of the Rosbalt-sponsored political club, 'Russia: Vector of Development 2004-2008,' with support from the Projects Institute and the National Information Group. Elizarov heads the center's population economics and demographics laboratory.

The Russian population has been dropping since 1992, when mortalities for the first time outpaced births, he said. This year's expected 1.5 million births will have their counterpart in approximately 2.4 million deaths, he said. The shortfall can only be made up by an in-migration of labor, he said. However, that flow has been ebbing: if 50%-60% of the difference between births and deaths was covered in the early 1990s, that percentage is now no more than 5%, he said. Elizarov noted with special emphasis that one of the main reasons for the population decline is 'the especially high mortality of men of working age.' The average age of death for Russian men is now 59 years, which puts it at the level of undeveloped Bangladesh, he said.

Look at the population of the Euro zone. They will have 500 million people in a space of 1/3 that of the US. Hwever, they are declining. When you have social programs you will go broke when that stuation persists. No way to recover. They tried many different thing, including paying people a generous monthly allowance for each child. That has been going on for over 30 years, to no avail. They tried to bring in Muslims to boost their income from taxes, now they see the danger in that one, but it is too late.
As for Russia, you are correct. Many effects from socialism/communism has brought problems that still linger today, especially productivity and work ethics, et., etc.

If population growth is the only factor --- why is a country like Mexico -- which has the highest doing so poorly? Their economy is collapsing, becoming totally dependent on the one created by a population (USA) which has slower population growth. You see that in Europe too --- it's the hoards coming in from high population growth Middle East who are fleeing their own terrible and decaying economies. Otherwise the reverse would be true.

We in the US have very high work ethics and productivity. You will see the Decay in countries that embrace Socialism.
Under that system, which promises everything under Government control, Population decline is their deathknell. Couple that with lower productivity, grossly overpriced products and absolutely no investment in Business, foreign or domestic, etc. (Last year in Germany there was not a single IPO) That should tell you about the business confidence, shouldn't it?

Oh, no insult meant or taken. I know, this is what socialist west media want to portray...why what good can be said of country with ban on abortion, Christian culture taught in school, bursting churchs, flat 13% tax, no sales tax, property right, liberalizing gun law and self defense law, cut in VAT tax and tarrif protection industry policy that now cause 7% grow rate, positive rate for now 4 years and running...with government operating in black, no deficit spending, rising reserves now at 74 Billion dollar??? Definitly not what Western Media socialists and communist member card holder (why all scream bloody murder when damned communists fall from 23% to less then 12% in Duma) can say about Russia?
