Kerry Faces Big Test In Internet Storm About Mystery Woman (UK)

Kerry faces big test in internet storm about mystery woman

The campaign of Senator John Kerry, the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination, faced its first media storm last night after a Right-wing website alleged that he had asked a woman to leave the country for personal reasons.

Mr Kerry's campaign did not respond to the allegation on the Drudge Report, a news tipster, most famous for disclosing that Bill Clinton had an affair with Monica Lewinsky, a White House intern. When contacted, the Kerry campaign had no immediate comment.

Waiting in the wings: Democratic hopeful, John Kerry

But Democratic sources blamed the allegation on Republican "dirty tricks". They said it marked the long-expected start of a campaign from the Right to smear the frontrunner and damage his chances of fighting a strong campaign against President George W Bush.

The report caused anguish among grassroots party activists just a day after it seemed that Mr Kerry, a decorated Vietnam war veteran, had been virtually crowned as the nominee after a remarkably swift and benign campaign.

The report also alleged that General Wesley Clark, who bowed out of the race on Wednesday, told reporters: "Kerry will implode over an intern issue."

Bill Buck, the national press secretary for the Clark campaign, said: "We do not respond to Right-wing internet postings in any way, shape or form."

Two hours after the report first appeared on the internet, Gen Clark's campaign rushed to his aid, indicating that the retired general would endorse Mr Kerry today.

Drudge claimed that several prominent news organisations in Washington have been investigating the rumours. But some of those named denied this.

The Drudge Report said the allegation explained why Howard Dean, the former frontrunner, was now vowing to fight on, having earlier pledged to bow out if he lost the next big contest on Tuesday.

Diehard Dean supporters exulted on internet forums at the news that the man who usurped their hero's position as favourite was at the centre of his own media storm.

Deaniacs remain bitter at what they perceive as the media's destruction of their candidate, who only a month ago led the polls. Last night Mr Kerry's campaign internet forum for activists was seething with accusations of Republican dirty tricks.

Mr Kerry took the lead in the race for the nomination three weeks ago when he won the first contest, the Iowa caucuses, since when he has won 11 out of the following 13 contests.

Following his victories in the south on Tuesday, in contests in Virginia and Tennessee, he was deemed to have proved his national credentials and to have all but eliminated his remaining rivals' hopes.

But he has always acknowledged that he will have to wait until March 2, when many of the big states vote, to secure a majority of the delegates who are allocated by each victory, to ensure he is chosen as the nominee at the party's convention in July.

The allegation on the Drudge Report provided the first test of the Kerry campaign under fire. While he has rampaged from victory to victory, it has been widely acknowledged that Mr Kerry has been spared the scrutiny normally devoted to frontrunners.

He has benefited from this year's accelerated timetable of the primaries and the overwhelming desire of Democrats of all stripes to unite and find the candidate who is best able to beat President George W Bush.

Mr Kerry was in Washington yesterday for strategy meetings and was expected to fly to Wisconsin today ahead of Tuesday's primary.

The Democrats have gone after President Bush over his 30 year old National Guard service with a vengeance. It seems to be turnabout's fair play.

About three times today I typed a swear word with one letter deleted, only to catch myself at the last second. Don't want to get banned. But just darned...

Stuff like this is what it’s all about. I’m thinking about the possibility that Drudge could be barking after some bogus information – a lead planted by the Kerry Campaign to give them an inoculation for the next, legitimate, scandal eruption (“That? That’s old news, we’re not going to rehash that!”).

I’m stunned that the media can go for so long without any direct reference to this. It’s as though they learned nothing about their initial coverage of the Lewinski matter. In that case – Drudge’s story was not so much Lewinski – but the insider game at Newsweak, the story of their spiking of the Isikoff story. You often get to the real guts via this kind of derivative entrée.

I love the attempt of the Democrats to label Drudge a “right wing” site. Even if you label Drudge’s opinion right wing – his column is only a single link – maybe in some instances 2 or 3 links on a page with hundreds of links to the work of other journalists and other organizations. Calling this repository of links to a broad cross section of sources “right wing” shows they really do not know of which they speak.

I know, I just get so po'ed at reporters, hoping that one day they will be called on the carpet and it never happens.

And don't most of 'em claim the reason they wanted to be 'journalists' was 'I want to make a difference'? Well, they sure are, as long as it fits the agenda of their buddies, the liberals. The thought of what is best for our country, never seems to enter most of their minds.

correct. and if the story is untrue, or impossible to substantiate, Kerry could easily spin this into a positive for himself. I am feeling more and more like this is a setup.

Just like the press knew who was leaking to THEM about what was going on in the grand jury, but dutifully reported the charges that it was the evil Starr.

The only way this is going to hurt is if the broad...er, intern sells her story to the highest bidder. But as I said earlier, Kerry has probably bought her off as the highest bidder already. Just what we need...another president capable of being blackmailed....

Ye of little faith. Rather than accept the obvious, I guess it is easier to develop all kinds of conspiracy theories that a deus ex machina (read Dems) is controlling events as part of some grand scheme.

Of course, the Dems are trying to dismiss it as a Right Wing smear job. They did the same thing with Clinton's dalliance with Monica. It worked until the facts came out. Let's see how Kerry handles it. Will he use the Clintonian "I did not have sex with that woman" or will he just say that he will not dignify such allegations with a reply,i.e., be ambiguous enough so if the facts do come out, he can not be accused of lying. Kerry is a master spinner, I just hope there is a blue dress.

Serial monogamists have a tendancy to experiment off and on with viable and non-viable candidates for the next legal mate.

Be that as it may, I expect this to dry up and blow away. It just doesn't matter to his core supporters. It might keep the Deaniacs alive a little longer but I don't think it will amount to anything in the long run. As a member of the vast-right-wing-conspiracy myself, I think the truth of the matter is that the center won't believe it, the left doesn't care, and the right isn't going to be changed by it in any way. A null input across the board.

But wait....I have an idea. What if the AP (friend of intern) staffer that Drudge reports in his story has befriended Drudge? Just what if she's willing to sing like a lark? (I hope she's taking her personal security more seriously these days.) Perhaps she's ready to release evidence (letters, photos, phone tapes, etc.) ala Linda Tripp? Or perhaps we only have to wait for Time Mag to come out with their story.....

but what exactly is the "story"? there needs to be more then just a relationship: sex in exchange for a job, a payoff to keep silent, abortion. an affair alone just isn't going to cut it.

Oh, I dunno....I think one truth about an affair by Kerry is worth about five lies that the libs will make up about Bush.

I just can't be. Kerry is riding the highest crest of his career at this moment, it would be insane for him to get sidetracked on something like this right now. It's absolutely dirty tricks by rival Dems, most probably with Lehane responsible somewhere. But the GOP will get blamed. Let's be patient, folks; lots of intrigue going on.
