Out here in Cali, our AWB won't sunset. Neither will ours here in NY state, though ours is, of course, less onerous.
I had hoped to pick up a "pre-ban" cheaply here in NY after the AWB sets, since most of the U.S. will be able to purchase new rifles with "assault weapons" features, but I have heard that the NY AWB might make even possession of a pre-ban "assault weapon" illegal. Apparently, there is some issue with the date of ownership of a pre-ban "assault weapon".
If anyone is in NY State, be very careful before you buy a pre-ban "assalut weapon". The issue of "pre-ban" legality is apparently one left up to the "interpretation" of the NY State Attorney General Elliot Spitzer. I'll give you one guess as to how that would be "interpreted".

Yeah, I've really been wanting an AR-15 lately (BANNED in Cali, even though it's only semi-auto).
Well, looks like I've only got about another a year and a half left in Cali ;) .
But hey, at least 56 got voted down, California's not COMPLETELY screwed I guess...
